SAN BERNARDINO – The Chico State men’s basketball team played California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) powerhouses Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino on successive nights Friday and Saturday. They battled. They scrapped. They clawed. They fought. They believed. They left all they had on the court. And they left Southern California with two punch-to-the-gut losses.

POMONA – The Chico State basketball team pulled off a thrilling come-from-behind win against Cal Poly Pomona earlier this season, rallying from 14 points down with 3:44 to play. The Wildcats came back against Cal Poly Pomona again Friday night. They did it twice in fact. Alas they left the Broncos too much time to respond. The Wildcats rallied from 10 points down in the first half to take a lead and then cut another double-digit lead to one before eventually succumbing to the defending national finalists 69-61.

CHICO – There may not be two more challenging consecutive days in Division II basketball in the nation. Thankfully, this year’s version of the Chico State men’s basketball team has been quick to rise to challenges. When the Wildcats travel to face third-place Cal Poly Pomona and first-place Cal State San Bernardino Friday and Saturday, respectively, they have an opportunity to prove to the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and themselves that they are in the battle for one of the top four spots in the CCAA for the long haul. Tipoff for both games is set for 7:30.

Junior forward Terence Pellum broke out of a mini-scoring slump in a big way over the weekend – after averaging just four points over a recent three-game span, Pellum poured in a combined 28 points to lead Chico State to a split of home games against Cal State Monterey Bay and San Francisco State. For his offensive exploits, the Seaside native has earned his second “Wildcat of the Week” award of the season.

Wildcats of the Week
Natasha Smith
Women's Basketball
The junior guard from Sacramento continued her most productive season to date, providing the bulk of the Chico State offense as well as being one of the team’s top rebounders in the Wildcats’ weekend sweep of Cal State Monterey Bay and San Francisco State.

Friday against Cal State Monterey Bay, Smith tallied 21 points – the fourth time this season she’s scored 20 or more – while nailing three 3-pointers, hauling in seven rebounds, dishing out four assists and grabbing four steals in Chico State’s 71-44 victory over the Otters. Saturday versus San Francisco State, Smith paced the Wildcats with 17 points, hitting 9-of-10 from the free throw line, contributed seven rebounds and four assists, and scored four points in the final 10 seconds to cement a 49-43 win over the Gators.

Smith leads the Wildcats in scoring (11.6 points a game), assists (3.6 a night) and steals (1.7 per contest) entering this week’s road games versus Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino. She ranks 12th in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in scoring, third in assists and eighth in steals, and is sixth among conference players in free throw percentage (75.6).

Smith’s weekend performance also moved her higher in several Chico State career statistical categories. She now ranks eighth in Wildcat history in assists (229), ninth in career free throws (206), and 10th all-time in steals (129). Smith also became just the 11th Chico State player ever to score over 900 points in a career.
Terence Pellum
Men's Basketball
The junior forward from Seaside broke out of a mini-scoring slump in a big way over the weekend – after averaging just four points over a three-game span, Pellum poured in a combined 28 points to lead Chico State to a split of home games against Cal State Monterey Bay and San Francisco State.

Friday against Cal State Monterey Bay, Pellum was one of four Wildcat players to score in double figures – his 11 points, three rebounds, two assists, one steal and two blocked shots made for an impressive night’s work, but it was not enough to keep Chico State from falling to the visiting Otters, 61-58. Saturday versus San Francisco State, Pellum was nearly unstoppable offensively, hitting 8-of-13 shots to post a team-high 17 points; he also hauled in six rebounds as the Wildcats downed the Gators 72-60.

Pellum enters the week as the Wildcats’ second-leading scorer, averaging 11.4 points a game. He is also second on the team in rebounding, averaging 5.4 boards a night. Pellum is currently tied for third in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in blocked shots (averaging 1.0 a game), and ranks in the conference Top 15 in scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage (50.3 percent).

CHICO – Second half is a bit of a misnomer. Sure, the second 20 minutes is half of a 40-minute basketball game. But the first half and the second half are not equals. A quick look at the Chico State men’s basketball season reveals that. The Wildcats are 10-6 overall and 6-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) thanks in large part to a number of strong second-half performances. How does a team that’s been outscored 490-437 in the first 20 minutes of games this season have a winning record? The Wildcats have outscored their opponents 606-550 in the second half and overtime. Six times they’ve trailed by five or more points early in the second half of games they went on to win.

CHICO – A memorable night for Chico State freshman Damario Sims was forgettable in every other way for the Wildcats in a 55-40 loss to visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday night in Acker Gym. Sims notched career highs with 16 points and 10 rebounds but the Wildcats were held to their lowest point total since a 77-37 loss to DePaul University on Dec. 4, 1988. The last time a non-NCAA Division I team displayed such defensive dominance against the Wildcats came during the 1952-53 season when Pasadena Nazarene beat them 50-32.

TURLOCK, Calif. – Even on a night when very few shots were falling, the Chico State men’s basketball team had a chance to overcome its many misfires and steal a victory from Cal State Stanislaus. In the end, though, the Wildcats could not overcome their 24.2 percent shooting, and despite pulling to within two points with four minutes to play, the ’Cats fell short of ending their five-game road swing on a positive note, as Stanislaus held on for a 66-56 win Tuesday at Warrior Arena.

TURLOCK – Having spent more time in a van then the gang from Scooby Doo over the last two weeks, Chico State’s men’s basketball players will undoubtedly stretch, breathe a breath of fresh air, and give thanks when they pull into town in the wee hours of Wednesday morning. They will have just finished playing their fifth road game in 13 days at Cal State Stanislaus. They’ll undoubtedly have van sleep hairstyles. The expressions they wear will likely depend on whether they come home with a victory.

ROHNERT PARK – Some people have a recurring nightmare about showing up to school or work naked. Others wake up in a cold sweat after another dream about arriving late or unprepared for a presentation or exam. The Chico State men’s basketball program’s recurring nightmare begins at the “Welcome to Rohnert Park” sign and, for 14 years in a row now, has ended with a disappointing loss at rival Sonoma State.
