Young Wildcat squad records impressive second-place showing

SAN FRANCISCO - Redshirt freshman Katie Spencer led a group of young Chico State Wildcats to a second-place finish at the San Francisco State Cross Country Invitational on Friday afternoon. Two freshmen and a sophomore all placed in the top 10 for the Wildcats.

Spencer completed the 6k course in 22:37, while redshirt freshman Shannon Rich (22:40) and sophomore Jessica Nelson (23:02) crossed the line in sixth and tenth place, respectively. Sophomore Jamie Humphreys (23:22) also finished in the top 20 at 18th overall and a third redshirt freshman, Jessica Brieno (23:52) was the final Wildcat scorer with her 28th-place finish.

Chico State totaled 63 points, finishing second to only University of St. Thomas (50) from Minnesota, whose Katie Theien won the race with a time of 21:45. San Jose State was third with 80 points and host San Francisco State finished fourth with 124 points.

Alyssa Flores (24:10), Brooke Bergesen (24:18), Ondi Foster (24:32), and Lauren Harvey (24:35) also ran in Wildcat uniform.

Next up, the Wildcats will try for their fifth conference title in seven years when they head to the CCAA Championships on October 25 in Cal State San Bernardino.
