Stingy defense not enough to beat S.F. State this time

CHICO - The Chico State women’s soccer team had been rather stingy when it came to giving up goals to San Francisco State, allowing just three goals in the previous eight meetings between the teams. Today it took just one Gator goal to beat the Wildcats 1-0 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match-up at University Soccer Stadium.

San Francisco State put up only four shots in the game, but was able to make one count in the 28th minute when Courtney Hamchuk lofted a ball from the midfield right into the Wildcat box where Chico keeper, Natalie Bensky was waiting. Bensky made a play for the ball, but was not able to hold on, dropping the ball in front of her where Robin Bowman was there to gather it and tap it in for the goal.

Chico State falls to 7-8-2 overall, 3-6-2 in CCAA play, while San Francisco State maintains its position at the top of the CCAA North Division with a record of 10-6-2 overall, 8-3-1 in conference play.

The Wildcats outshot the Gators, 6-4, in the game, and dominated much of the second half, just as San Francisco State had done in the first period. Despite the added intensity and ball control, Chico State was unable to connect for the score.

It was especially disappointing for Chico State’s five seniors: Katie McIntosh, Angie Goulding, Stephanie Insler, Abby Stretch, and Melissa Lindsay, who were honored before the contest in their final home game of their careers.

Chico State plays its final three CCAA games on the road, beginning with a 12:30 match next Friday, Oct. 24, at Cal State Stanislaus.
