Two preps, JC Transfer to join women's basketball team for 2008-09
Chico State women’s basketball coach Molly Goodenbour has announced the signing of three players who will attend Chico State beginning this fall. Emeryville High School senior Synchro Bull, Colfax High School senior Courtney Harrison, and Sierra Community College transfer Annelise Miller will join the program for the 2008-09 season.

Bull, a 5-foot-7 guard, averaged 23 points and 10.2 rebounds per game last season and finished ninth in the state in scoring. The Division V All-State selection and Honorable Mention San Francisco Chronicle All-Metro Team pick also notched 4.9 assists and 3.5 steals per game.

“Synchro is athletic and quick and was relied upon to do a little bit of everything for her high school team,” said Goodenbour. “She will play the point and wing positions for us and add to our depth and athleticism there. She loves to play defense and we look forward to having her defensive presence in the lineup.”
Harrison, a 5-foot-9 guard, was a four-year varsity starter and three-time All-League selection. She averaged 11 points and six rebounds per game while burying 70 3-pointers as a senior.

“Courtney is an excellent shooter and very good all-around athlete,” said Goodenbour. “She will give us size and shooting on the perimeter and she has a great work ethic.”

Miller, the Sierra College Defensive Player of the Year as a freshman and sophomore, averaged 9.8 points, 7.9 rebounds, 2.8 steals, and 2.6 assists per game while earning All-Conference honors last season. The 5-foot-10 sophomore helped lead the Wolverines to a 26-7 overall record and 12-2 league mark.

“Annie is a relentless worker and a very tenacious player,” said Goodenbour. “She will help us rebound and defend and she’ll be a consistent contributor over the course of the season.”

The trio will join a program that lost just two seniors from last season’s 28-6 team that qualified for the NCAA Championship Tournament for the sixth year in a row.

Wildcats of the Week
Natasha Smith
Women's Basketball
The junior guard from Sacramento continued her most productive season to date, providing the bulk of the Chico State offense as well as being one of the team’s top rebounders in the Wildcats’ weekend sweep of Cal State Monterey Bay and San Francisco State.

Friday against Cal State Monterey Bay, Smith tallied 21 points – the fourth time this season she’s scored 20 or more – while nailing three 3-pointers, hauling in seven rebounds, dishing out four assists and grabbing four steals in Chico State’s 71-44 victory over the Otters. Saturday versus San Francisco State, Smith paced the Wildcats with 17 points, hitting 9-of-10 from the free throw line, contributed seven rebounds and four assists, and scored four points in the final 10 seconds to cement a 49-43 win over the Gators.

Smith leads the Wildcats in scoring (11.6 points a game), assists (3.6 a night) and steals (1.7 per contest) entering this week’s road games versus Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino. She ranks 12th in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in scoring, third in assists and eighth in steals, and is sixth among conference players in free throw percentage (75.6).

Smith’s weekend performance also moved her higher in several Chico State career statistical categories. She now ranks eighth in Wildcat history in assists (229), ninth in career free throws (206), and 10th all-time in steals (129). Smith also became just the 11th Chico State player ever to score over 900 points in a career.
Terence Pellum
Men's Basketball
The junior forward from Seaside broke out of a mini-scoring slump in a big way over the weekend – after averaging just four points over a three-game span, Pellum poured in a combined 28 points to lead Chico State to a split of home games against Cal State Monterey Bay and San Francisco State.

Friday against Cal State Monterey Bay, Pellum was one of four Wildcat players to score in double figures – his 11 points, three rebounds, two assists, one steal and two blocked shots made for an impressive night’s work, but it was not enough to keep Chico State from falling to the visiting Otters, 61-58. Saturday versus San Francisco State, Pellum was nearly unstoppable offensively, hitting 8-of-13 shots to post a team-high 17 points; he also hauled in six rebounds as the Wildcats downed the Gators 72-60.

Pellum enters the week as the Wildcats’ second-leading scorer, averaging 11.4 points a game. He is also second on the team in rebounding, averaging 5.4 boards a night. Pellum is currently tied for third in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in blocked shots (averaging 1.0 a game), and ranks in the conference Top 15 in scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage (50.3 percent).

SAN BERNARDINO – For Chico State’s Synchro Bull, Saturday will be a night she will always remember. For Krystal Urzua of Cal State San Bernardino, it’s a game she’d just as soon forget. The Wildcats held Urzua, one of the top scorers in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), to just five points – all coming in the final two minutes – while Bull poured in a career-high 20 as the ’Cats used a 20-3 second half run to break open a tight contest and beat the Coyotes 61-51 at Coussoulis Arena.

POMONA – The Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball team has made a habit out of winning close games – the Broncos are an impressive 6-1 this season in games decided by six points or less. That penchant for winning the squeakers came in handy Friday, as the Broncos engaged in a tight contest with Chico State, and like their first meeting this season – a two-point Pomona win – the Broncos emerged victorious, using two early second half runs and two critical buckets in the final two minutes to hand the Wildcats a disappointing 53-48 defeat at Kellogg Gymnasium.

This past weekend junior guard Natasha Smith – continuing one of her most productive seasons to date – was the Chico State women’s basketball team’s “go-to” player, providing the bulk of the offense as well as being among the top rebounders in the Wildcats’ weekend sweep of Cal State Monterey Bay and San Francisco State. CHICO – When two of the best defensive teams in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) square off, it’s almost guaranteed that points will be at a premium. That was indeed the scenario Saturday night at Acker Gym, and the Chico State women’s basketball team – despite being held to one of its lowest scoring nights of the season by San Francisco State – was even stingier on the defensive end than the Gators. The Wildcats held San Francisco State to just 26 percent shooting, and Natasha Smith delivered four clutch points in the final 10 seconds of the contest to give Chico State a hard-earned 49-43 win.
