CHICO, Calif. – Ryan Trask, who recently wrapped up his Chico State golf career, qualified for the 2008 United States Amateur Monday by winning a playoff hole to finish second at the sectional qualifying tournament at Butte Creek Country Club Monday. After carding rounds of 68 and 71, Trask rolled home a nine-foot birdie putt on the opening playoff hole to beat UNLV senior Matt Kinsinger for the final qualifying spot.
“This tournament and qualifying for the amateur have been my top priorities this last month,” said Trask. “After I birdied my first hole of the tournament I knew this was going to be my day.”
The 2008 United States Amateur is being hosted by the historic Pinehurst Resort, the site of the 1999 and 2005 US Open Championships, and the future home of the 2014 US Open Championship. The tournament, featuring 312 amateurs from around the nation, will be played August 18-24. The field will be cut to 64 players following 36-hole qualifying. Match play begins Wednesday and concludes with the 36-hole final on Sunday. Live results will be available at www.amateur.org.
Trask capped his senior season at Chico State in style, finishing ninth at the NCAA West Regional and just missing a spot in the NCAA Championship Tournament. He went on to win the 2008 Redding City Championship in June with a par on the opening playoff hole.
