Gama helps gain Wildcats share of lead

CHICO – Sylvester Gama fired a 3-under par 141 over the opening two rounds of the InterWest Wildcat Classic Monday to help lead the Chico State men’s golf team into a tie for first place with Holy Names University. The Wildcats and Hawks were the class of the competition Monday, as their 3-over par 579s were 11 strokes better than any other team.

Gama and Holy Names’ Stephan Edman share the individual lead, and Gama’s teammate Kyle Souza is in third place at 1-under par, two strokes back. In all, Chico State boasts five athletes tied for eighth or better, and two more tied for 12th.

Kevin Rei, playing for the “White” team, which is currently tied for fifth, is in a tie for sixth place at 2-over par. Eric Frazzetta and Matt Williams are tied for eighth at 3-over, and Bobby Bucey and Brandon Harkins are tied for 12th at 4-over.

Olof Rosborg of Saint Martin’s and Bryan Kiss of Cal State Stanislaus are tied for fourth place at even-par.

The Wildcats finished the first round in third place, three strokes behind both Holy Names and Cal State Stanislaus. But Chico State carded the best round of the day in the afternoon – a 4-under par 284 – to move into a tie for first. Cal State Stanislaus and Saint Martin’s are tied for third entering Tuesday’s final round.
