Wildcats tied for second after first day of Sonoma State Men’s Invitational

SANTA ROSA, Calif. – Rain in the Bay Area cut the first day of action in the Sonoma State Men’s Invitational from 36 to 18 holes, but the inclement weather didn’t have much affect on Chico State – the Wildcats shot a combined 4-over par 292 Monday to earn a share of second place, and trail event leader Western Washington University by just three strokes entering tomorrow’s final 18 holes at Santa Rosa Golf & Country Club.

Kyle Souza is tied for fourth on the Invitational’s individual leader board, leading the Chico State attack with a 2-under par 70. Eric Frazzetta also posted a sub-par round – his 1-under 71 was good for a share of sixth place. Bobby Bucey was among a group of 13 golfers tied for 24th with a 3-over par 75, while Sylvester Gama, winner of last week’s Wildcat InterWest Classic, finished in a tie for 38th place with a 4-over 76. Brandon Harkins rounded out the ’Cats team scorecard with a 7-over par 79; he currently sits in a tie for 59th place.

Chico State is the top California Collegiate Athletic Association team in the 15-school field. UC San Diego finished Monday’s opening round tied for fifth place with host (and defending national champion) Sonoma State at 9-over par 297; Cal State Stanislaus was eighth at 10-over 298.
