Souza earns second CCAA Golfer of the Week honor of fall

WALNUT CREEK - Chico State's Kyle Souza has been named California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men's Golfer of the Week for the week of Oct. 14-20, it was announced on Wednesday. It marked the second time Souza has earned the award this fall.

Souza, a sophomore from Livermore, finished second at the rain-shortened Sonoma State Invitational that concluded on Tuesday. He posted rounds of 70-69 for a 5-under par total of 139 and one-shot behind individual medalist Matthew Garcia of Academy of Art.

Souza's efforts helped Chico State to the team title, marking the third straight year that the Wildcats have won the Sonoma State Invitational and the second week in a row the Wildcats claimed a tournament title.

Souza, who was named the CCAA Freshman of the Year and earned First Team All-West Region and First Team All-CCAA last year, wrapped up the fall with a 71.3 stroke average through 10 rounds of competition and three top-three finishes out of four tournaments.

The tournament marked the final fall event for Chico State, which returns to action in February when it competes in the Golfweek Division II Spring Invitational in Orlando, Fla.

The Wildcats have dominated the CCAA Golfer of the Week awards this fall, winning or sharing the award all four weeks.
