McKINLEYVILLE, Calif. – The Chico State women’s cross country team lived up to its No. 1 national ranking in impressive fashion Saturday, placing four runners in the top 10 and easily outdistancing the field to capture the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) championship at Beau Pre Golf Course in McKinleyville.
The victory gave the Wildcats their second straight CCAA cross country crown and sixth in the last eight years. For the second time in as many years, Chico State’s Gary Towne was honored following the 6-kilometer race as the conference’s Coach of the Year.
All told, seven Wildcat runners earned All-CCAA honors Saturday. Julie Shaw posted Chico State’s best individual time, finishing third in the 100 runner field with a time of 22:21.6. Right behind in fourth place was Alia Gray (22:22.9), with Kara Lubieniecki coming in fifth with a time of 22:27.6. Shannon Rich also finished in the top 10, taking eighth place at 23:00.8.
Jonah Weeks placed 13th with a time of 23:23.4, earning All-CCAA recognition and the conference’s Newcomer of the Year award. Paige Henker and Alyssa Flores finished 14th and 15th to grab All-CCAA honors with times of 23:25.0 and 23:28.9, respectively.
Colleen Joyce just missed All-CCAA recognition with a 16th place finish Saturday, clocking in at 23:31.2. Rounding out the Wildcat cross country competitors were Amy Schnittger (finishing 23rd with a time of 23:51.2) and Samantha Racine (27th, 24:07.3).
Chico State team score of 33 points beat out second place UC San Diego, who finished with 84 points. Cal State L.A.’s Vivien Wadeck, with a time of 21:52.6, took individual honors for the second straight year and was named CCAA Runner of the Year.
