SAN FRANCISCO – October has been a frustrating month for the Chico State men’s soccer team. The Wildcats took out their frustrations on San Francisco State in a 4-1 victory in the Bay Area. Evan Armstrong, in his second to last match in a Wildcat uniform, scored twice and assisted on another goal. Zach Bradford tallied a goal and an assist.
The Wildcats snapped a six-match winless skid that started with a 1-1 tie at home against San Francisco State on Oct. 4, to improve to 8-7-4 overall and 5-6-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). San Francisco State dipped to 6-10-3 overall and 3-9-3 in the CCAA.
Bradford opened the scoring in the 57th minute when he buried his first goal of the season from 20 yards out. Ryan Nevarez’s pass up the goal.
The Wildcats made it 2-0 less than seven minutes later when Armstrong corralled Kyle Crain’s pass and beat the goalkeeper to the right from close range.
San Francisco State briefly got back into the match on Josh Kuluris’ goal 34 seconds later, but Chris Akwaja banged home an Armstrong cross five minutes later to stretch the Wildcats’ lead to 3-1.
Armstrong put the match away in the 85th minute when he headed home Bradford’s cross.
The Wildcats outshot San Francisco State 13-6, and cracked seven shots on goal, to San Francisco State’s four. The Wildcats also enjoyed a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Keohane made a trio of saves and collected his 24th victory, which ties him with Rick Wood (1979-81) for the fifth most in Chico State history.
Chico State will wrap up its season Sunday at Cal State Monterey Bay.
