CHICO – Depth has keyed the Chico State women’s cross country program’s rise to the top of the national rankings this year. Friday, the Wildcats showed just how deep their talent pool is. Resting 10 of their top runners, the Wildcats still managed to finish second out of 16 teams at the San Francisco State Invitational at Speedway Meadow in Golden Gate Park Friday afternoon.
Freshmen Paige Henker and Michelle Johnson, both Chico High School graduates, finished 11th and 17th, respectively, in what turned out to be a very competitive field won by defending National Champion Jessica Pixler of Seattle Pacific. The Wildcats finished with 81 points, well behind winner Alaska Anchorage (15 points), but comfortably ahead of Division I Santa Clara (116).
Freshman Michelle Johnson was the second Wildcat to cross the line.
Henker covered the six-kilometer course in 22:32 and finished just six seconds out of eighth place. Johnson crossed the line in 23:04. Jessica Nelson (23:16) finished 23rd, Julie Platero (23:22) 25th, and Brooke Bergesen (23:36) 31st to complete the Wildcats’ scoring.
Stephanie Consiglio (47th place, 24:00), Jamie Humphreys (70th, 24:29), and Nicole Reed (102nd, 25:23) also competed for the Wildcats.
Chico State’s next race – the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships in McKinleville – marks the beginning of the postseason. The Wildcats have won five of the last seven CCAA titles, including last season’s.
