SEASIDE - Evan Armstrong scored the equalizing goal, assisted by Chris Akwaja, but the Chico State men's soccer team fell to Cal State Monterey Bay 2-1 in the season finale for both teams Sunday. The Wildcats finished their 2009 campaign 8-8-4 overall and 5-7-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Armstrong took a pass from Akwaja and beat the goalkeeper to his left to tie the match at 1-1 in the 40th minute. But the Otters retook the lead three minutes later, and held the Wildcats at bay throughout the second half. Cal State Monterey Bay finished its season 6-11-3 overall and 5-8-3 in the CCAA.
Along with Armstrong, Adam Raish, Michael Keohane, Kyle Crain, and Kyle Conrad were playing the final collegiate match for the Wildcats.
Chico State outshot Cal State Monterey Bay 15-5, and earned a 3-0 edge in corner kicks, but Brenden Baca had seven saves for the Otters, while his teammates helped him out with an astonishing five others.
