WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – They teamed up for nearly 1,000 kills, 760 digs and 78 service aces, so it was only appropriate that Makenzie Snyder and Gillian Heydorff were acknowledged together for their exceptional efforts. Thursday the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) included Snyder and Heydorff among 13 players selected to the All-CCAA First Team for the 2009 season.
It’s the second straight First Team honor for Heydorff, who was also an All-CCAA second team selection as a sophomore. Gillian finished her Chico State career with her name prominently featured in the Wildcat record books, becoming the all-time service aces leader (138) and ranking third in career kills (1,204) third in digs (1,057), seventh in service aces per set (0.37), seventh in solo blocks (42) and eighth in kills per set (3.84). Heydorff, who just missed making four consecutive NCAA Championship Tournament appearances, is one of only two Wildcats in school history to record 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a career.
Snyder earns her first conference honor after being named the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) West Region Freshmen of the Year in 2008. The sophomore from Placerville led the CCAA in kills (538) and points (5.22) this season, ranked second in kills per set (4.72) and ninth in the conference in service aces per set (0.38). With two years of eligibility left, Snyder already ranks among the Top 10 in Chico State history in kills (802), kills per set (3.83) and hitting percentage (.225).
Heydorff and Snyder extends the Wildcats’ string of players named to the All-CCAA First Team to five straight years.
