LEXINGTON, Ky. – Chico State’s Makenzie Snyder accomplished a lot in the just-completed 2009 volleyball season – besides etching her name in the school record books and leading the Wildcats to a 23-9 mark, the sophomore outside hitter has been honored with All-CCAA, American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and NCAA/Daktronics All-West Region First Team selections. Monday, Makenzie received another national accolade, and it’s her biggest yet – the AVCA Division II All-America Committee named Snyder to its 2009 All-American Second Team.
Snyder is one of 32 athletes included in AVCA’s First, Second and Third Team selections to achieve All-American status for the first time. Included were six California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) players, with two others receiving Honorable Mentions.
Snyder put up the numbers to merit her All-American recognition – she ranks No. 2 in the nation with her Chico State record 4.72 kills per set. Her 538 kills for the season lead the CCAA and is the third highest total in the country. And Snyder has the opportunity to make the Wildcat record book her own in the coming seasons – with two years of eligibility remaining, Snyder already ranks among the Top 10 in Chico State history in kills (802), kills per set (3.83) and hitting percentage (.225).
Snyder’s All-American Team selection is the first for a Wildcat volleyball player since Erica Brick was named Third Team All-American in 2006, with Brick, Jamie Houle and Lindsay Macias receiving Honor Mention All-American honors the previous three seasons.
