WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – In his final year in the Chico State men’s soccer program, senior Evan Armstrong put up the best single season numbers of his career, leading the Wildcats in goals, assists and points. His impressive efforts were recognized Thursday when Armstrong was named to the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Soccer All-Conference First Team.
Armstrong, who finished with eight goals, four assists, 20 points and three match-winning kicks in the just completed 2009 season, was among 12 players to earn All-CCAA First Team honors. A second team all-conference selection in 2008, Armstrong amassed 19 goals in his Wildcat career, along with 11 assists and eight match-winning kicks.
Chris Akwaja was also recognized by the CCAA – the Wildcats’ sophomore forward, who contributed a career-high five goals to Chico State’s 2009 season, was one of 11 conference players receiving Honorable Mention accolades.
Victor Regalado of Cal State Stanislaus was named the CCAA’s Most Valuable Offensive Player Thursday, with Kevin Gallaugher of Cal State Dominguez Hills taking the prize for the conference’s Most Valuable Defensive Player. Cal State San Bernardino’s Martin Esqueda was chosen as the CCAA Freshman of the Year, while Markus Dickerson of Cal State Dominguez Hills was selection as conference Newcomer of the Year. Chris Chamides, who led Cal State L.A. to a conference-best 17-2-1 record and a No. 6 national ranking, was named CCAA Coach of the Year.
