NEW ORLEANS, La. – On the eve of the NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships, two Chico State representatives heading to San Angelo, Texas, can already call themselves winners. The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Monday named Wildcat Michael Wickman the D-II West Region Men's Track Athlete of the Year, while Gary Towne was selected as the Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year.
Wickman, who this week will compete for the national title in the 800- and 1,500-meter run, posted the fastest time in the 800-meters by any Division II runner this season with a time of 1:49.38 May 9 at the Occidental Invitational. The junior from Walnut Creek also registered the fifth-best time nationwide in the 1,500-meters (3:44.45) at the Oxy Invite. Wickman won both events at the recent California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Track & Field Championships at Chico State’s University Stadium.
Chico State's Gary Towne was named USTFCCCA Men's Assistant Coach of the Year.
The USTFCCCA accolade is the latest in a long string of Coach of the Year awards for Towne, who last fall guided the Chico State men’s and women’s cross country teams to third and seventh place finishes, respectively, in the NCAA Division II Championships. This spring Towne has mentored seven Wildcats runners who will compete in distance events at this week’s D-II Track & Field Championships at Angelo State University’s LeGrand Sports Complex.
Three other CCAA representatives received West Region honors Monday from the USTFCCCA – UC San Diego’s Danielle Thu was named Female Athlete of the Year; Kendra Reimer of Cal State L.A. won the Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year award; and Darcy Ahner of UC San Diego was selected as Women’s Head Coach of the Year.
There are no upcoming events.

Women's Basketball
Before the 2009-10 even got underway, Chico State women’s basketball Head Coach Brian Fogel described junior guard Natasha Smith as “the key to our success.” Truer words have never spoken, as Smith has turned her already impressive game up a notch to lead the Wildcats to the NCAA Championship Tournament West Regional title game. Her efforts have netted the Sacramento native her third Wildcat of the Week honor this season.
Smith earned All-NCAA Championship Tournament West Region Team honors by averaging 14 points, 7.7 assists, five rebounds, and three steals per game during the Wildcats’ run to the Sweet 16 and West Region title game.
Friday against third seeded Western Washington, Smith scored 15 points, snared four rebounds, dished out five assists and made three steals as the Wildcats downed the Vikings 79-68. Saturday versus Humboldt State, the All-CCAA first team selection was even better, posting her second career double-double with 15 points and 10 assists, while hauling in a team-high eight rebounds and five steals in Chico State’s come-from-behind 86-76 victory over the Lumberjacks. Monday, in the regional title game against Seattle Pacific, Smith finished with 12 points, eight assists, three rebounds, and a steal while drawing the defensive assignment against Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year Daesha Henderson and limiting her to just five points on 1-of-10 shooting.
Smith, who led the CCAA in free throw percentage (.824) and assists (134), also led the ’Cats in scoring (11.5 points per game) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.44). She continues to move up the Chico State career records ladder with each contest. With one year of eligibility still remaining, Smith ranks ninth all-time in scoring, sixth in assists, seventh in free throws and 10th in career steals and 3-pointers.

TURLOCK – Clinton Hayes has had a successful collegiate career to this point, but in many respects he has waited in the shadows of the Chico State men’s distance program’s talented group. He’s ready to cast some shadows of his own. The senior from Oakland won the 800-meters, finished third in the 1,500, and anchored the Wildcats’ third-place team in the 4x400 relays to help lead the Wildcats to victory in their inaugural team event of 2009-10, Cal State Stanislaus’ Kim Duyst Invitational. The Wildcats scored 185 points to fend off Cal Poly Pomona (171) and Cal State Stanislaus (167) for the victory.

KODIAK, Alaska – It’s possible that Miles Dunbar has never had more motivation. The Chico State distance runner was not only trying to hang onto the lead at the American Legion July Fourth 10K Run and Walk in Kodiak, Alaska – he was trying to make sure his brother or father didn’t take it from him. They didn’t. In fact, no one did.
