All-American redemption for Bertucci and Jarvis
Matt Jarvis shows off his fifth-place trophy,
Matt Jarvis shows off his fifth-place trophy,
SAN ANGELO, Tex. – This time, Ryan Bertucci and Matt Jarvis are coming home All-Americans. They each missed that goal – a top eight finish - by a matter of inches last year, finishing 10th and ninth, respectively. Friday, exactly one year later, Bertucci finished fourth in the high jump and Jarvis fifth in the shot put on the second day of the NCAA Track & Field National Championships to earn that honorable distinction.

Bertucci entered the event with the 10th seed, but the junior matched his best effort of the season, 6-feet-10¾ along with three other competitors. He was awarded a fourth-place tie because of tiebreaker procedures.

Ryan Bertucci finished fourth in the nation in the high jump.
Jarvis missed earning All-America honors by three inches last year. But the senior from Redding was not to be denied this time around. His third throw went 58-feet-1, putting him into third place until the final round of throws in which he fell to fifth. Jarvis’ effort was only two inches shorter than his career best, which ranks third on Chico State’s all-time list.

Meanwhile, on the oval, the Wildcats’ Michael Wickman took another step toward his quest for at least one National Title by advancing to the finals of the 800-meters by winning his heat in 1:50.02. He’ll toe the line for the 1,500-meter final Saturday at 6:15 with the second fastest qualifying time and then double back for the 800-meter final at 7:46 with the fastest qualifying time.

Unfortunately for Chico State fans, that was the last bit of real good news Friday. Wickman’s teammates in the 800-meters – David Wellman and Clinton Hayes – each failed to advance to the finals. Wellman missed a spot in the finals by just one place (one-tenth of a second).

Kara Lubieniecki failed to advance through the 5,000-meter qualifying heats, clocking a disappointing time of 17:56 (nearly a minute slower than her personal best). That was the 15th fastest mark of the day, but only 12 runners advanced to Saturday’s finals.

The men’s 5K preliminaries were equally frustrating to the Wildcats faithful as Tim Cannon and last year’s 1,500-meter National Championship runner-up Angel Marquez each missing out on a trip to the final. They were the final two finishers in the first heat and finished 15th and 17th, respectively.

Sophomore Kelly Clancey finished 15th in the heptathlon, while decathlete Jake Nelson was forced to sit out the final half of that competition with a pulled hamstring.

The Chico State men enter Saturday’s action in eighth place overall with 8.5 points, while the Chico State women currently sit in 14th place with eight points. They have a chance to move up in those standings Saturday. Shannon McVannel will take part in the women’s steeplechase final at 5:10 p.m., and Beau Rogers will race in the men’s steeplechase final at 5:25.

Wickman will put the finishing touches on Chico State’s 2009 campaign, and hopes to bring home the Wildcats’ fifth National Title in the last three years.

Wildcats of the Week
Kelly Clancey
Women's Track
There’s something about the annual Chico Multi that always brings out the best in heptathlete Kelly Clancey. For the second straight year, the junior from Modesto earned an NCAA Championships provisional bid in the heptathlon during the two-day Chico Multi, collecting 4,743 total points over the seven events, easily surpassing the 4,400 points needed to secure the provisional bid.

Clancey was the dominant athlete in the 12-person field, taking first place in four of the seven hepthatlon events. She took top honors in the high jump (5 feet, 3.25 inches), long jump (17 feet, 9.5 inches), 100-meter hurdles (15.42 seconds) and the 800-meter run (2 minutes, 20.25 second), while finishing second in the 200-meter dash (26.34 seconds), fourth in the shot put and sixth in the javelin throw.

Clancey, already well ahead of last season's schedule in which she scored a 4,400 in the Chico Multi and went on to post a career-best 4,811 at the CCAA Championships and advance to the NCAA Championships, will try to better her provisional mark March 24-25 at the California Multi, hosted by UC Berkeley.
Sylvester Gama
Men's Golf
Sylvester Gama carded three consecutive sub-par rounds and finished alone in second place at 7-under par at the Coyote Classic last Monday and Tuesday. Gama, competing as an individual, finished six strokes clear of third place in a standout performance that was bettered only by Cal State San Bernardino's Gene Webster, Jr.

Gama went 2-under in the opening round on the par-70 course at Arrowhead Country Club. He went 1-under in the afternoon. And on Tuesday, Gama's 66 was bettered only by Webster and matched his teammate Kyle Souza for the third lowest round of the tournament.

A 6-foot senior from Santa Barbara (Santa Barbara CC), Gama has now gone under par in eight of his 16 rounds of the 2009-10 season. His stroke average of 72.1 is second on the Wildcats as are his three top-five finishes.

Those efforts have made him easily the team's most improved player thus far this season. His stroke average was 75.3 last season and he had just one top-10 finish - an eighth-place finish at the CCAA Championships.

CHICO – In summing up Kelly Clancey’s performance at the two-day Chico Multi, you can forgive Chico State women’s track fans for using the old Yogi Berra line, “it’s like déjà vu all over again.” For the second straight year, the junior from Modesto has used the Chico Multi as a springboard for an NCAA Championships provisional bid in the Heptathlon – after earning 4,400 points a year ago to qualify, Clancey piled up a bid-worthy 4,743 points over the seven events in the 2010 edition of the Chico Multi, held at University Stadium.

CHICO – Kelly Clancey put up an NCAA provisional qualifying mark at last season’s Chico State Multi Invitational. It was an accomplishment that had the entire Wildcat track program buzzing. What it did not have was Clancey satisfied. Fast forward one year later. The now-junior has smashed her first-day number from last year’s event (2,576) and leads the 25th annual Chico Multi heptathlon with a personal-best score of 2,829.

CHICO – “And the winner, from Chico State…” The track announcer at University Stadium repeated that line so often Saturday that it’s a wonder he didn’t screw it up at least one of the four times a Chico State athlete didn’t win an event. The Chico State women won 15 of 19 events Saturday at University Stadium to blow away the field in the opening meet of their 2010 season. The Wildcats outdistanced their nearest competitor, Sacramento State, 260-116.
