ROHNERT PARK – Some people have a recurring nightmare about showing up to school or work naked. Others wake up in a cold sweat after another dream about arriving late or unprepared for a presentation or exam. The Chico State men’s basketball program’s recurring nightmare begins at the “Welcome to Rohnert Park” sign and, for 14 years in a row now, has ended with a disappointing loss at rival Sonoma State.

Disappointment is probably not a strong enough a word to describe the Wildcats’ feelings following a 77-58 loss Saturday night to a Seawolves’ team that was 3-11 after six straight losses over the last month.

The good news is, the Wildcats will still wake up Sunday morning with a record of 9-4 overall and 5-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). And that’s a start to the season beyond most Chico State fans’ wildest dreams on the heels of four straight seasons of nine wins or fewer.

The nightmares in Rohnert Park have not always been the same for the Wildcats. There have been times when they played dreamily until the final harrowing seconds of a heartbreaking loss. Other times, it was almost as if they did show up to work naked, having never even bothered to lace up their sneakers. Half of the 14 straight losses have come by 10 or more points.

Saturday night was one of those nights.

Men's basketball player Darren Nye.
Darren Nye finished with five points and three rebounds.
The Wildcats missed eight of their first 10 shots and turned the ball over nine times in the first 10 minutes of the game to fall behind 15-6. Then things got truly frightening. The Wildcats were a ghost of the team that entered the game 9-3 overall and 6-1 on the road.

Will Olsem railed 5-of-6 three-pointers and surpassed his season scoring high in the first half with 15 points for the host Seawolves. Meanwhile, the Wildcats turned the ball over 14 times in the first half (they entered the night averaging 12 per game) and missed 17-of-24 field goals, 6-of-7 threes, and 5-of-10 free throws.

The Wildcats needed Brian Seals’ first-half buzzer-beating jumper to go into the half down only 37-20.

Another Olsem 3-pointer then sparked a 12-3 Sonoma State run out of the lockerroom and the lead grew to its largest of the night, 49-23, when he made a pair of free throws with 15:04 to play.

The Wildcats’ bench personell offered a glimmer of hope with a pair of 8-0 runs that cut the lead to 67-54 with five minutes to play. But the Wildcats never managed to get closer in the second half.

Seals finished with a career-high 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting in 16 minutes off the bench. Terence Pellum chipped in 11 points, but no other Wildcats reached double figures.

Olsem nearly doubled his previous career high with 26 points on 9-of-11 shooting as Sonoma State improved to 4-11 overall and 3-7 in the CCAA. Steven Pratt loaded the stat sheet with 15 points, eight assists, seven rebounds, and a pair of steals.

The Wildcats still have an opportunity to finish plus-.500 on a five game road swing that started out in promising fashion at 2-0, but has leveled off at 2-2 with losses at Humboldt State and Sonoma State this weekend. They’ll travel to Turlock to face Cal State Stanislaus Tuesday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30. A win would also ensure the program’s first plus-.500 road record since the 2002-03 season and give them double-digit wins for the first time since 2004-05.

Following that game, the Wildcats will play nine of their final 13 games at home in Acker Gym, beginning Friday, Jan. 22 against Cal State L.A.

Wildcats of the Week
Sylvester Gama
Men's Golf
Sylvester Gama carded three consecutive sub-par rounds and finished alone in second place at 7-under par at the Coyote Classic last Monday and Tuesday. Gama, competing as an individual, finished six strokes clear of third place in a standout performance that was bettered only by Cal State San Bernardino's Gene Webster, Jr.

Gama went 2-under in the opening round on the par-70 course at Arrowhead Country Club. He went 1-under in the afternoon. And on Tuesday, Gama's 66 was bettered only by Webster and matched his teammate Kyle Souza for the third lowest round of the tournament.

A 6-foot senior from Santa Barbara (Santa Barbara CC), Gama has now gone under par in eight of his 16 rounds of the 2009-10 season. His stroke average of 72.1 is second on the Wildcats as are his three top-five finishes.

Those efforts have made him easily the team's most improved player thus far this season. His stroke average was 75.3 last season and he had just one top-10 finish - an eighth-place finish at the CCAA Championships.
Kelly Clancey
Women's Track
There’s something about the annual Chico Multi that always brings out the best in heptathlete Kelly Clancey. For the second straight year, the junior from Modesto earned an NCAA Championships provisional bid in the heptathlon during the two-day Chico Multi, collecting 4,743 total points over the seven events, easily surpassing the 4,400 points needed to secure the provisional bid.

Clancey was the dominant athlete in the 12-person field, taking first place in four of the seven hepthatlon events. She took top honors in the high jump (5 feet, 3.25 inches), long jump (17 feet, 9.5 inches), 100-meter hurdles (15.42 seconds) and the 800-meter run (2 minutes, 20.25 second), while finishing second in the 200-meter dash (26.34 seconds), fourth in the shot put and sixth in the javelin throw.

Clancey, already well ahead of last season's schedule in which she scored a 4,400 in the Chico Multi and went on to post a career-best 4,811 at the CCAA Championships and advance to the NCAA Championships, will try to better her provisional mark March 24-25 at the California Multi, hosted by UC Berkeley.

ARCATA – The Chico State men’s basketball team has climbed from the deepest valley of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) to its upper echelon in just two seasons under Head Coach Greg Clink. The Wildcats’ quest to reach the conference’s highest peak will have to wait at least one more season. A remarkable comeback came up just short as the reigning king of the conference mountain, Cal Poly Pomona, defeated the Wildcats 80-77 in the CCAA Championship Tournament semifinals Friday night at Humboldt State’s Lumberjack Arena.

CARSON – Age has rendered the piece of paper the color of a smoker’s teeth. Tiny rips and crevices ring the edges. It’s a history of the 1994-95 Chico State men’s basketball campaign and the line second from the bottom reads: Chico State 86, UC Davis 79 – March 3, 1995. For 14 years, 11 months and 30 days that line signified the last postseason victory for the Chico State men’s basketball team. But today is a new day.

WALNUT CREEK – The coaches of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) voted Jon Baird the conference’s Newcomer of the Year and to thee Second Team All-Conference team at the conclusion of the 2006-07 men’s basketball regular season. He was a junior then, right out of Shasta College. A hot-shot shooter with outstanding numbers, even more so than this season’s in fact. But his team was not winning (the Wildcats finished that season 7-20) and he now admits that he didn’t display the type of leadership the program needed from its leading scorer.

CARSON – The story of the 2009-10 Chico State men’s basketball team has been one of overcoming obstacles. The Wildcats overcame the stigma of four straight losing seasons with a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA)-best seven-game improvement over last season under second year Head Coach Greg Clink. Guard Jon Baird is the team’s leading scorer despite spending two years away from the game before this, his senior season. In the face of taller opposition week in and week out, 6-foot-2 junior forward Roderick Hawkins has been arguably the team’s most valuable player while ranking third in the CCAA in rebounding. And many of the team’s six freshmen have made Clink proud when pressed into duty with the game on the line.
