Big man receives a big honor - Pellum named Wildcat of the Week

Junior forward Terence Pellum broke out of a mini-scoring slump in a big way over the weekend – after averaging just four points over a recent three-game span, Pellum poured in a combined 28 points to lead Chico State to a split of home games against Cal State Monterey Bay and San Francisco State. For his offensive exploits, the Seaside native has earned his second “Wildcat of the Week” award of the season.

Friday against Cal State Monterey Bay, Pellum was one of four Wildcat players to score in double figures – his 11 points, three rebounds, two assists, one steal and two blocked shots made for an impressive night’s work, but it was not enough to keep Chico State from falling to the visiting Otters, 61-58. Saturday versus San Francisco State, Pellum was nearly unstoppable offensively, hitting 8-of-13 shots to post a team-high 17 points; he also hauled in six rebounds as the Wildcats downed the Gators 72-60.

Pellum enters the week as the Wildcats’ second-leading scorer, averaging 11.4 points a game. He is also second on the team in rebounding, averaging 5.4 boards a night. Pellum is currently tied for third in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in blocked shots (averaging 1.0 a game), and ranks in the conference Top 15 in scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage (50.3 percent).

Wildcats of the Week

Sylvester Gama

Men's Golf

Sylvester Gama carded three consecutive sub-par rounds and finished alone in second place at 7-under par at the Coyote Classic last Monday and Tuesday. Gama, competing as an individual, finished six strokes clear of third place in a standout performance that was bettered only by Cal State San Bernardino's Gene Webster, Jr.

Gama went 2-under in the opening round on the par-70 course at Arrowhead Country Club. He went 1-under in the afternoon. And on Tuesday, Gama's 66 was bettered only by Webster and matched his teammate Kyle Souza for the third lowest round of the tournament.

A 6-foot senior from Santa Barbara (Santa Barbara CC), Gama has now gone under par in eight of his 16 rounds of the 2009-10 season. His stroke average of 72.1 is second on the Wildcats as are his three top-five finishes.

Those efforts have made him easily the team's most improved player thus far this season. His stroke average was 75.3 last season and he had just one top-10 finish - an eighth-place finish at the CCAA Championships.

Kelly Clancey

Women's Track

There’s something about the annual Chico Multi that always brings out the best in heptathlete Kelly Clancey. For the second straight year, the junior from Modesto earned an NCAA Championships provisional bid in the heptathlon during the two-day Chico Multi, collecting 4,743 total points over the seven events, easily surpassing the 4,400 points needed to secure the provisional bid.

Clancey was the dominant athlete in the 12-person field, taking first place in four of the seven hepthatlon events. She took top honors in the high jump (5 feet, 3.25 inches), long jump (17 feet, 9.5 inches), 100-meter hurdles (15.42 seconds) and the 800-meter run (2 minutes, 20.25 second), while finishing second in the 200-meter dash (26.34 seconds), fourth in the shot put and sixth in the javelin throw.

Clancey, already well ahead of last season's schedule in which she scored a 4,400 in the Chico Multi and went on to post a career-best 4,811 at the CCAA Championships and advance to the NCAA Championships, will try to better her provisional mark March 24-25 at the California Multi, hosted by UC Berkeley.

Magical season comes to an end for the Chico State men's basketball team

ARCATA – The Chico State men’s basketball team has climbed from the deepest valley of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) to its upper echelon in just two seasons under Head Coach Greg Clink. The Wildcats’ quest to reach the conference’s highest peak will have to wait at least one more season. A remarkable comeback came up just short as the reigning king of the conference mountain, Cal Poly Pomona, defeated the Wildcats 80-77 in the CCAA Championship Tournament semifinals Friday night at Humboldt State’s Lumberjack Arena.

Already one upset victory into the 2010 postseason, the Wildcats will attempt to knock off top-seeded Cal Poly Pomona in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championship Tournament semifinals Friday at 5:30 and officially earn the title of Cinderella.

The Chico State men’s and women’s basketball teams will compete in the California Collegiate Athletic Association tournament semifinals on Friday, March 5 at Lumberjack Arena in Arcata. Both teams will take on Cal Poly Pomona, and tip-off is set for 12:30 p.m. for the women and 5:30 p.m. for the men. The finals will take place on Saturday. CARSON – Age has rendered the piece of paper the color of a smoker’s teeth. Tiny rips and crevices ring the edges. It’s a history of the 1994-95 Chico State men’s basketball campaign and the line second from the bottom reads: Chico State 86, UC Davis 79 – March 3, 1995. For 14 years, 11 months and 30 days that line signified the last postseason victory for the Chico State men’s basketball team. But today is a new day.

First Team All-CCAA recognition bestowed upon Wildcats’ leader Baird

WALNUT CREEK – The coaches of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) voted Jon Baird the conference’s Newcomer of the Year and to thee Second Team All-Conference team at the conclusion of the 2006-07 men’s basketball regular season. He was a junior then, right out of Shasta College. A hot-shot shooter with outstanding numbers, even more so than this season’s in fact. But his team was not winning (the Wildcats finished that season 7-20) and he now admits that he didn’t display the type of leadership the program needed from its leading scorer.

Toros are the obstacle for Chico State men’s basketball team in Tuesday’s CCAA Championship Tournament opener

CARSON – The story of the 2009-10 Chico State men’s basketball team has been one of overcoming obstacles. The Wildcats overcame the stigma of four straight losing seasons with a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA)-best seven-game improvement over last season under second year Head Coach Greg Clink. Guard Jon Baird is the team’s leading scorer despite spending two years away from the game before this, his senior season. In the face of taller opposition week in and week out, 6-foot-2 junior forward Roderick Hawkins has been arguably the team’s most valuable player while ranking third in the CCAA in rebounding. And many of the team’s six freshmen have made Clink proud when pressed into duty with the game on the line.
