SAN JOSE – Former Chico State men’s soccer star Chris Wondolowski is going to tie up his cleats in the South Bay yet again in 2010. The San Jose Earthquakes has signed Wondolowski to play for the upcoming Major League Soccer (MLS) season. Terms of the deal were not disclosed by the club.
Wondolowski came to San Jose in June of last year as part of a trade with MLS’s Houston Dynamo. Wondolowski tallied three goals in 14 matches for the Earthquakes in 2009, giving him a career-high five for the season.
“We are happy to sign Chris to a new contract,” said John Doyle, the Earthquakes’ general manager of soccer operations, according to a story on the MLS Web site. “He gives us a lot of options because of his versatility and he is a good finisher.”
Wondolowski was originally drafted 41st overall by the Earthquakes in the 2005 MLS Supplemental Draft.
A native of Danville, Wondolowski played at Chico State from 2001-04. His 39 goals as a Wildcat ranks third all-time; his 101 total points are second on Chico State’s career points list.
He also accomplished one of only 18 hat tricks in Wildcat history, scoring three goals against San Francisco State in a 5-4 Chico State victory Oct. 20, 2001 at University Soccer Stadium.
Before his trade to the Earthquakes, Wondolowksi spent three-plus seasons with the Dynamo, winning two MLS Cups in 2006 and 2007.
