Wildcats tied for fourth after opening round of Golfweek Spring Invitational

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Chico State men’s golf team turned in a solid effort Sunday in the first round of the Golfweek Division II Spring Invitational, carding a collective 9-over par 297 and claiming a share of fourth place in the three-day, 54-hole event at Reunion Resort’s Independence Course. The Wildcats placed two golfers in the individual top 10 – Lucas Delgado heads into Monday’s second round tied for second with a 1-under 71, while Kyle Souza is tied for 10th with a 1-over par 73.

Chico State, the top school in Golfstat’s head-to-head national rankings and No. 4 in the current Golf World/Nike Division II Coaches Poll, briefly led the 18-team field before settling into a three-way tie for fourth place with the University of West Florida and Nova Southeastern University. Lander University sits atop the team standings with a 3-over par 291, followed by Lynn University at 4-over 292 and Queen’s University of Charlotte, which posted a 7-over 295.

Delgado, the reigning California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Player of the Year who struggled in three tournaments last fall, effectively played the par-72, 6,892-yard Independence Course Sunday, with just two front-nine bogies to blemish an otherwise consistent 18 holes of golf. Delgado shot a 3-under par 33 on the back nine, with birdies on the 10th, 13th and 17th to finish at 1-under 71.

Kyle Souza birdied his first two holes of the Spring Invitational, then bogeyed four of his next 10 holes before shooting 1-under par over his last five holes to post a 1-over 73 for the day.

Sylvester Gama finished the Spring Invitational’s opening round tied for 33rd place with a 4-over par 76, while Wildcat teammate Eric Frazzetta shot a 5-over 77 for a share of 47th place. Brandon Harkins’ three birdies were the highlights of an 8-over par round of 80, leaving him in a tie for 70th place on the individual leaderboard.

Steven Brame of Lynn University leads the 90-player field with a first round 5-under par 67.

Chico State begins round two action of the Golfweek Spring Invitational Monday at 8:25 a.m. Eastern Time. The tournament’s final 18 holes are scheduled for Tuesday.

Wildcats of the Week

Brian Beeman

Men's Track

As a decathlete, Brian Beeman is used to running all over the place. But he took it to a new level last week. After competing in the decathlon, high jump and javelin to help lead the Chico State men’s track & field team to the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship March 6-8, he got on a bus and arrived back in Chico in the wee hours of Sunday morning. Then, he turned around to head back to Southern California for the Claremont Classic Decathlon and turned in an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark and personal best score of 6,512 on Thursday and Friday.

That iron-man feet has earned him Wildcat of the Week honors.

Beeman finished sixth at the Burns Track and Field Complex while logging the 15th best score in the nation this year. He won the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:31.75, placed third in the 400-meter dash (51.19 seconds) and tied for third in the high jump (6-feet-02.75).

Beeman and a number of his Wildcats teammates now await Wednesday morning’s NCAA Track and Field Championships selection show to found out if he’s earned a berth to the National Championships May 27-29 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Kacie McCarthy

Softball

Kacie McCarthy’s freshman season as a Wildcat has been filled with highlights, but the Shingletown native turned in her most memorable performances of the year last weekend in the NCAA West Sub-Regional at Sonoma State, posting three straight victories and helping Chico State advance to the West Super Regional in Hawaii. The Wildcats are just two wins away from reaching the Division II College World Series, thanks in large part to the pitching prowess of McCarthy, who is the latest recipient of Wildcat of the Week honors.

In Friday’s Sub-Regional opener, McCarthy took over for Chico State starter Jessica McDermott and tossed seven-and-a-third innings of relief, striking out a career-high 11 batters and earning the win as the Wildcats beat 15th ranked Grand Canyon University 5-4 in eight innings. In Saturday’s winner’s bracket game versus No. 14 Sonoma State, McCarthy twirled a one-hit shutout in Chico State’s 7-0 victory over the host Seawolves. Sunday McCarthy completed the postseason trifecta, going the distance for the 18th time this year and getting credit for the “W” as the ’Cats rallied back from three runs down to score four times in the bottom of the sixth inning and pull out a 4-3 victory over Dixie State to sweep through the Sub-Regional and advance to this weekend’s West Super Regional.

McCarthy, now 16-10 on the season, lowered her season ERA to 1.92 with the three weekend wins and is ranked third among California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) pitchers. She also is sixth in the conference in victories and innings pitched (164.1). She leads the Wildcats in wins, complete games, innings pitched and appearances (29).

Chico State takes on the No. 3 ranked Sea Warriors of Hawaii Pacific Friday at 5 p.m. Pacific time in the opener of the West Super Regional in Kaneohe, Hawaii. The winner of the best-of-three set will advance to the Division II College World Series May 27-31 in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Thompson comes up short in U.S. Amateur Championship

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – Chico State's Cody Thompson shot a 5-over par 77 Tuesday – a six stroke improvement from Monday's opening round – but it wasn't enough to make the cut in stroke play and advance in the 110th U.S. Amateur Championship, being played at Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place, Wash. Thompson completed the event's first two rounds with a score of 17-over 160, leaving him in a tie for 247th place in the 312 player field.

Thompson posted a 12-over par 83 in Monday's opening round of stroke play, leaving him in a tie for 263rd place in the 312-player field at Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place, Wash.

The Chico State men's golf team will host the InterWest Wildcat Classic Oct. 11-12 at Butte Creek Country Club as part of a four-tournament fall schedule. This will mark the only chance for fans to see the Wildcats locally following last year's third-place finish at the NCAA Championship Tournament.

Thompson qualifies for next month’s U.S. Amateur Championship

SANTA CRUZ – It seems the biggest and most prestigious amateur golf tournament in the country just wouldn't be complete without a Wildcat in the field. Incoming Chico State men's golfer Cody Thompson, set to join the 'Cats this fall, shot a 1-over par 145 during a 36-hole sectional qualifier Monday to earn a spot in the 110th U.S. Amateur Championship, taking place August 23-29 at Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place, Wash. Thompson becomes the third Chico State golfer in as many years to compete for the coveted Havemeyer Cup.

Souza swings into sweet 16 before quest for Masters quelled

GREENSBORO, N.C. – I admit it. I was just using it to catch your eye. I had no illusions that Kyle Souza had a legitimate chance at qualifying for the Master’s Golf Tournament. After all, he was one of 156 golfers swinging for one spot in the arguably the most prestigious golf tournament in the world at the 85th U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. Then there’s the fact that Souza just finished his sophomore year a little old Chico State. We don’t often get a chance to combine the Master’s and the name of a Chico State athlete in a lead, so it was a no-brainer.

Souza stays alive, wins match play opener in U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Less than an hour after he found out he had survived 36 holes of stroke play to advance to the field of 64 in the 85th U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, Chico State men’s golfer Kyle Souza teed it up Wednesday morning for the opening round of match play at Bryan Park Golf and Conference Center in Greensboro, N.C. It was a successful day for the Livermore native, as Souza – the No. 56 seed – defeated ninth-seeded Justin Lower 5 and 3 to move on to Thursday’s match play competition.

Souza advances to match play in U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Second round of stroke play in the 85th U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship – interrupted by a lightning storm late Tuesday – was concluded Wednesday morning, with 18 players wrapping up their final few holes. When all the scorecards were turned in, Chico State’s men golfer Kyle Souza was among the top 64 players in the tournament and earned the right to move on to the first round of match play at the Champions Course at Bryan Park Golf and Conference Center in Greensboro, N.C. Souza finished with a 36-hole total of 4-over par 146, putting him in an 11-way for 48th place.
