ORLANDO, Fla. – The Chico State men’s golf team hovered near the top of the leaderboard throughout the Golfweek Spring Invitational, and in Tuesday’s third and final round the No. 1-ranked Wildcats registered their best round of the tournament, carding a collective 2-over par 290 to finish the 54-hole event at 22-over 886, securing a share of third place at the Reunion Resort’s Independence Course in Orlando, Fla.
Chico State featured two top 10 golfers on the individual leaderboard, and four of the five Wildcats competing finished among the top 25. Kyle Souza birdied three of his last five holes Tuesday for a 1-under par 71; his three-day total of 2-over 218 was good for a tie for fifth place in the Spring Invitational. Lucas Delgado finished Tuesday’s final round with a 2-over par 74, giving the reigning California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Player of the Year a 54-hole total of 4-over 220 and a share of 10th place in the tournament.
Eric Frazzetta enjoyed his best round of the Spring Invitational Tuesday, collecting three birdies and an eagle on the way to a 1-under par 71; he finished the tournament with an 8-over 224 to earn a tie for 22nd place. Sylvester Gama recovered from a shaky front nine Tuesday with two birdies on the final five holes to finish the round at 3-over par 75; Gama’s three-day total of 9-over 225 was good for a share of 25th place. Brandon Harkins posted his best round Tuesday – a 2-over par 74 gave him a 54-hole total of 14-over 230 and moved Harkins into a tie for 42nd place.
Florida’s Nova Southeastern University won the Golfweek Spring Inviational with a three-day total of 14-over par 878. The University of West Florida finished second, two strokes back at 16-over 880, followed by Chico State and South Carolina’s Lander University; both schools shooting 22-over par 886.
Lander University’s Roberto Nasalli-Rocca won the tournament’s top individual honor, shooting a 4-under par 68 Tuesday to finish at 5-under 211, two strokes better than Steven Brame of Lynn University.
