Two future Wildcats to play for NorCal prep titles Saturday at ARCO

SACRAMENTO – Chico State men’s basketball fans can glimpse of the program’s future by making the short drive south to ARCO Arena for the Northern California High School Basketball Championships Saturday. Nate Appel, a 6-foot-8 De La Salle High School product, will help lead the Spartans against Newark Memorial in the Northern California Division I title game at 8 p.m. Jordan Barton, a 6-foot-7 Bishop O’Dowd (Oakland) product, will lead the Dragons against Sacramento High School in the Division III title game, scheduled to tip at noon.

Appel, a First Team All-East Bay Athletic League selection, scored 11 points and grabbed nine boards in the Spartans’ North Coast Section Championship game victory against Newark Memorial and again scored 11 in the team’s victory against San Ramon Valley in the NorCal quarterfinals. De La Salle is 29-2 on the season and won the EBAL with a 14-2 mark. Appel’s De La Salle teams have gone 95-5 from his freshman season through the present.

Barton had a monster game in the Dragons’ win against El Cerrito in the NorCal quarterfinals, scoring 16 points and pulling down 14 boards. He’s averaging 11 points per game and leads the team in rebounding. The Dragons were a perfect 16-0 in the Hayward Area Athletic League and are 29-3 on the season.

“Jordan and Nate add size, athleticism, and versatility to our team,” said Wildcats Head Coach Greg Clink after Barton and Appel committed to Chico State back in November. “Jordan is a relentless rebounder who can score in the post and attack off the dribble. Nate has the ability to stretch the defense with his 3-point shooting range and can also guard and score on the inside. Coach Allocco at De La Salle and Coach Vierra at Bishop O’Dowd run great, winning programs, and their coaching has obviously rubbed off on Jordan and Nate. We are very excited to have these two quality student-athletes as part of the future of Chico State basketball.”

Clink and his staff have signed 14 Northern California players since taking the reigns of the program following the 2007-08 season, including six from San Francisco Bay Area schools. They hope to add to that list when the signing period begins again in mid-April.

Caressa Williams

Women's Basketball

For much of the season, redshirt freshman Caressa Williams has been sitting at the end of the Chico State women’s basketball team bench, seeing very little on-court action. But the former Paradise High School star continued to work hard on her game, and the extra effort has paid off in recent weeks with significantly more playing time. After a string of short but impressive relief roles, Williams delivered a breakout performance Saturday against Humboldt State, posting career highs in scoring and rebounding in the Wildcats’ 90-67 thumping of Humboldt State. Her strongest effort to date makes Williams the latest Wildcat of the Week.

Williams shot over 58 percent (7-of-12), averaging just under 10 points and five rebounds in Chico State’s two weekend contests. She began the weekend with a solid outing Friday against Sonoma State, contributing five points, two rebounds, one assist and two steals in 16 minutes of action. Saturday, though, she was a major part of the Wildcat reserves combining to score 51 in the team’s convincing 23-point win over Humboldt. Williams played 24 minutes, scoring 14 points and hauling in seven rebounds – both career highs – connecting on five of her seven field goal attempts. She also chipped in with an assist and a steal in addition to shining on the defensive end.

Williams’ productive weekend saw her season scoring average more than double, rising from 1.6 to 3.6 points per game. Overall, she is shooting 50 percent from the field and is averaging two rebounds a contest.

Chico State is back in action this weekend, hosting Cal Poly Pomona Friday and San Francisco State Saturday at Acker Gym. Both games are scheduled to tipoff at 5:30 p.m.

Amir Carraway capped a strong weekend with team highs of 16 points and seven rebounds in the Wildcats’ huge win against Humboldt State Saturday night to earn Wildcat of the Week honors for the second time this season.

The sophomore from Vallejo made two game-sealing free throws with 21 seconds left to finish the night 6-of-7 from the free throw line and pulled down key rebounds on two of the Lumberjacks’ last three possessions. He also set the screen on Jay Flores’ dagger 3-pointer with 40 seconds left.

Carraway finished with 10 points and four rebounds despite playing just 18 minutes due to foul trouble during the Wildcats’ loss to Sonoma State the night before.

The 6-foot-5 forward leads the team in rebounding at 5.5 per game and ranks second in scoring at 10.6 points per game a season after averaging just 1.4 points and one rebound in only 5.4 minutes a night. He’s now led the team in scoring five times and rebounding six this season.

Carraway and the Wildcats, among four teams tied for second in the California Collegiate Athletic Association standings, trail conference co-leaders Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Dominguez Hills by just one game. They’ll welcome Cal Poly Pomona to town Friday night and San Francisco State Saturday.

Wildcats back in first in surprisingly simple fashion

In perhaps their most impressive victory under fourth-year Head Coach Greg Clink, the Chico State men’s basketball team led by double figures for the final 27-plus minutes of the game in a 75-55 win against Cal Poly Pomona that left the Wildcats and Broncos among five teams tied for first place atop the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with just seven left to play.

Colossal clashes set for Acker Gym

It’s often said that every men’s basketball weekend in the California Collegiate Athletic Association is big. So let’s call this one colossal. The Wildcats welcome Cal Poly Pomona and San Francisco State to town on Friday and Saturday, respectively, and with eight games remaining on the conference schedule, the third-place Wildcats are hoping to position themselves for a run at the conference crown, or at least a run at one of the top four spots and the opening-round CCAA Championship Tournament game that goes with it.

Comcast to broadcast CCAA Basketball Tournament final fours

WALNUT CREEK – The California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and Comcast Hometown Network (CHN) announced today an agreement to televise the 2012 CCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament Semifinals and Finals. The CCAA Tournament opens with first round contests at campus sites on Tuesday, Feb. 28 before shifting to UC San Diego’s RIMAC Arena in La Jolla for the semifinals and finals on March 2 and 3, respectively.

How sweep it is!

Jay Flores’ desire to win runs deeper than most. That’s obvious on almost any night the Chico State men’s basketball team takes the floor. But Saturday he showed that his range runs deep as well, breaking the backs of the visiting Lumberjacks with a 26-foot 3-pointer with 40 seconds left that propelled the Wildcats to a 67-61 win against Humboldt State.

How fitting that the number three is smack dab in the middle of one and five. After moving into a tie for first place last weekend, the Wildcats dropped into a tie for fifth in large part because they failed to knock down the 3-point shot in a 62-59 loss to Sonoma State Friday night at Acker Gym.
