CHICO – In summing up Kelly Clancey’s performance at the two-day Chico Multi, you can forgive Chico State women’s track fans for using the old Yogi Berra line, “it’s like déjà vu all over again.” For the second straight year, the junior from Modesto has used the Chico Multi as a springboard for an NCAA Championships provisional bid in the Heptathlon – after earning 4,400 points a year ago to qualify, Clancey piled up a bid-worthy 4,743 points over the seven events in the 2010 edition of the Chico Multi, held at University Stadium.
Clancey, after collecting 2,829 points in Thursday’s four Heptathlon events, won two of the remaining three events Friday, finishing first in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 9.5 inches, and topping the field in the 800-meter run. Clancey’s Chico State teammate, sophomore Shannon Jordan, finished seventh in the 11-woman Heptathlon field with a total of 3,193 points, while Wildcat Maddie Allen, running unattached, came in eighth place with a two-day total of 3,126 points.
Sarah Nichols of Butte College finished second to Clancey in the Heptathlon with 4,587 points.
In the Chico Multi’s Heptathlon team rankings, Chico State finished first with 12 points, followed by Butte College with eight. California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) rivals Humboldt State and Cal State Stanislaus placed third and fourth, earning six and five team points, respectively.
