Humboldt State shoots down Wildcats 85-55 to capture CCAA Tournament Championship title

ARCATA – With a win over Humboldt State Saturday in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championship Tournament final, the Chico State women’s basketball team had a chance to officially punch its ticket to the NCAA Championship Tournament West Regional. But it was not to be – with the Lumberjacks’ convincing 85-55 win over the Wildcats at Lumberjack Arena, it is Humboldt that earns the CCAA’s automatic bid to the West Regional, leaving the ’Cats awaiting Monday’s NCAA selection committee decision as to whether Chico State will be awarded an at-large berth to the West Region…or if the 2009-10 season has come to an end.

Humboldt State (19-10 overall), posting its first victory over Chico State in three tries this season, completed one of the quickest turnarounds in CCAA postseason history en route to winning the conference tournament championship. After dropping their final four regular season games and six of their last eight, the Lumberjacks regrouped to beat Cal State Monterey Bay in the tournament opener, upset No. 1 seed UC San Diego Friday, and then used 14 3-pointers as the catalyst to overwhelm Chico State in Saturday’s tourney title game. Saturday’s loss ended the Wildcats’ 10-game winning streak and gives Chico a 21-9 season record – the question is, will winning 13 of their final 15 contests be enough to get the ’Cats into the NCAA West Regional?

Both teams were a little amped up in the opening minutes of Saturday’s conference tournament championship game, piling up several turnovers while producing precious little offense. With Chico State ahead 5-2, Humboldt State finally got untracked, scoring 10 unanswered points to go up by seven. The Wildcats responded with what turned out to be their best stretch of basketball all night, using a Natasha Smith 3-pointer and six points from Taylor Lydon to key a 17-4 run and put Chico State back in front, 22-16. The Wildcats were still ahead 27-24 went the offense went cold, going the final five minutes of the half without a field goal…meanwhile, the Lumberjacks reeled off nine straight points (highlighted by one of Andrea Bobic’s four 3-pointers in the period) to forge a six point advantage. A pair of Synchro Bull free throws to end the half sliced Humboldt State’s lead to 33-29 at intermission.

Humboldt State came out firing in the second half, and it seemed that every Lumberjack that heaved one up from behind the arc was finding nothing but net. Three-pointers by Luiza Osborne, Bree Halsey and two treys each from Bobic and Lisa Petty ignited a lightning-quick 24-4 Humboldt State run, and just five minutes into the period the ’Jacks were suddenly sporting a huge 57-33 lead. Chico State tried valiantly to rally back, but the offense just could not generate any consistency (the five Wildcat starters – Bull, Smith, Melissa Richardson, Pauline Ferrall and Christine Vest – were just 8-for-37 from the field the entire game)…in fact, only one Chico State player – Courtney Harrison – scored in the final 10:38 of the contest. The Wildcats could get no closer than 19 the rest of the way – Humboldt State scored eight of the game’s last 11 points to roll to the 85-55 victory and the CCAA Championship Tournament crown.

Harrison hit three 3-pointers and scored 15 points in 14 minutes off the bench to lead Chico State, while Smith recorded a 12-point night and was the lone Wildcat to be named to the CCAA All-Tournament team. Bobic, who earned Tournament MVP honors, led all scorers with 25 points, hitting 7-of-10 from 3-point range; Brittney Taylor, the CCAA’s leading scorer, had 23 points for the Lumberjacks, while Petty hit four treys for Humboldt State to finish with 14 points.

BOX SCORE

Chico State will now wait to find out its postseason fate – the West Region selection committee will determine the eight teams that will advance to the NCAA Championship Tournament late Monday night, March 8, with the official announcement expected Tuesday morning. The NCAA Championship Tournament West Regional will get underway Saturday, March 13 at a site still to be determined.

Wildcats of the Week
Amir Carraway
Men's Basketball
Amir Carraway capped a strong weekend with team highs of 16 points and seven rebounds in the Wildcats’ huge win against Humboldt State Saturday night to earn Wildcat of the Week honors for the second time this season.

The sophomore from Vallejo made two game-sealing free throws with 21 seconds left to finish the night 6-of-7 from the free throw line and pulled down key rebounds on two of the Lumberjacks’ last three possessions. He also set the screen on Jay Flores’ dagger 3-pointer with 40 seconds left.

Carraway finished with 10 points and four rebounds despite playing just 18 minutes due to foul trouble during the Wildcats’ loss to Sonoma State the night before.

The 6-foot-5 forward leads the team in rebounding at 5.5 per game and ranks second in scoring at 10.6 points per game a season after averaging just 1.4 points and one rebound in only 5.4 minutes a night. He’s now led the team in scoring five times and rebounding six this season.

Carraway and the Wildcats, among four teams tied for second in the California Collegiate Athletic Association standings, trail conference co-leaders Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Dominguez Hills by just one game. They’ll welcome Cal Poly Pomona to town Friday night and San Francisco State Saturday.
Caressa Williams
Women's Basketball
For much of the season, redshirt freshman Caressa Williams has been sitting at the end of the Chico State women’s basketball team bench, seeing very little on-court action. But the former Paradise High School star continued to work hard on her game, and the extra effort has paid off in recent weeks with significantly more playing time. After a string of short but impressive relief roles, Williams delivered a breakout performance Saturday against Humboldt State, posting career highs in scoring and rebounding in the Wildcats’ 90-67 thumping of Humboldt State. Her strongest effort to date makes Williams the latest Wildcat of the Week.

Williams shot over 58 percent (7-of-12), averaging just under 10 points and five rebounds in Chico State’s two weekend contests. She began the weekend with a solid outing Friday against Sonoma State, contributing five points, two rebounds, one assist and two steals in 16 minutes of action. Saturday, though, she was a major part of the Wildcat reserves combining to score 51 in the team’s convincing 23-point win over Humboldt. Williams played 24 minutes, scoring 14 points and hauling in seven rebounds – both career highs – connecting on five of her seven field goal attempts. She also chipped in with an assist and a steal in addition to shining on the defensive end.

Williams’ productive weekend saw her season scoring average more than double, rising from 1.6 to 3.6 points per game. Overall, she is shooting 50 percent from the field and is averaging two rebounds a contest.

Chico State is back in action this weekend, hosting Cal Poly Pomona Friday and San Francisco State Saturday at Acker Gym. Both games are scheduled to tipoff at 5:30 p.m.

CHICO – For the Chico State women’s basketball team to climb the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings and the NCAA West Region rankings, the Wildcats will need to figure out how to thwart zone defenses. The ’Cats have struggled throughout January against teams that have thrown up the zone and held the Wildcats to minimal fast break opportunities. Friday was no different, as Sonoma State – the conference’s top defensive team – ran the zone to near perfection, holding the Wildcats to just 16 first half points on the way to a 57-45 victory at Acker Gym.
