Arakawa awarded Wilson/CCAA Player of the Week honors

WALNUT CREEK - Chico State right fielder Adam Arakawa has been named the Wilson/California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Player of the Week for the week of March 1-7, it was announced on Monday.
Arakawa, a senior from Aiea, Hawaii, had four straight multi-hit games, finishing 10-for-15, and reached base in 14 of his 19 plate appearances (a .737 on-base percentage) to lead the Wildcats to a 3-1 series victory against Cal Poly Pomona over the weekend. Arakawa banged out four doubles, a triple, and a home run, driving in six runs and scoring 10.
In Friday’s 22-4 victory, Arakawa went 2-for-4 with two walks and scored four times. He went 4-for-4 with three doubles, three runs scored, and an RBI in the Wildcats’ 13-10 win in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday. In the second game, Arakawa went 2-for-3 with a walk, double, home run, two runs scored and an RBI. He homered in the fourth to give Chico State the lead, and then with the Wildcats trailing by a run in the sixth, Arakawa doubled home the tying run before scoring the winning run. In Sunday’s finale, Arakawa went 2-for-4 with a walk, triple, two RBI, and two runs scored.
Arakawa is now batting a team-high .467 on the season and also leads the Wildcats in hits (28), walks (14) and on-base percentage (.568). He was the West Region Gold Glove recipient last season and an Honorable Mention All-American, and has not committed an error this season.
Arakawa is the second Wildcat in a row to earn the honor. Designated hitter Johnny Hay was last week's CCAA Player of the Week.
Chico State returns to action on Friday when it travels to Cal State San Bernardino for a four-game series featuring the two teams tied for second in the CCAA.

Men's Track
As a decathlete, Brian Beeman is used to running all over the place. But he took it to a new level last week. After competing in the decathlon, high jump and javelin to help lead the Chico State men’s track & field team to the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship March 6-8, he got on a bus and arrived back in Chico in the wee hours of Sunday morning. Then, he turned around to head back to Southern California for the Claremont Classic Decathlon and turned in an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark and personal best score of 6,512 on Thursday and Friday.
That iron-man feet has earned him Wildcat of the Week honors.
Beeman finished sixth at the Burns Track and Field Complex while logging the 15th best score in the nation this year. He won the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:31.75, placed third in the 400-meter dash (51.19 seconds) and tied for third in the high jump (6-feet-02.75).
Beeman and a number of his Wildcats teammates now await Wednesday morning’s NCAA Track and Field Championships selection show to found out if he’s earned a berth to the National Championships May 27-29 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Softball
Kacie McCarthy’s freshman season as a Wildcat has been filled with highlights, but the Shingletown native turned in her most memorable performances of the year last weekend in the NCAA West Sub-Regional at Sonoma State, posting three straight victories and helping Chico State advance to the West Super Regional in Hawaii. The Wildcats are just two wins away from reaching the Division II College World Series, thanks in large part to the pitching prowess of McCarthy, who is the latest recipient of Wildcat of the Week honors.
In Friday’s Sub-Regional opener, McCarthy took over for Chico State starter Jessica McDermott and tossed seven-and-a-third innings of relief, striking out a career-high 11 batters and earning the win as the Wildcats beat 15th ranked Grand Canyon University 5-4 in eight innings. In Saturday’s winner’s bracket game versus No. 14 Sonoma State, McCarthy twirled a one-hit shutout in Chico State’s 7-0 victory over the host Seawolves. Sunday McCarthy completed the postseason trifecta, going the distance for the 18th time this year and getting credit for the “W” as the ’Cats rallied back from three runs down to score four times in the bottom of the sixth inning and pull out a 4-3 victory over Dixie State to sweep through the Sub-Regional and advance to this weekend’s West Super Regional.
McCarthy, now 16-10 on the season, lowered her season ERA to 1.92 with the three weekend wins and is ranked third among California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) pitchers. She also is sixth in the conference in victories and innings pitched (164.1). She leads the Wildcats in wins, complete games, innings pitched and appearances (29).
Chico State takes on the No. 3 ranked Sea Warriors of Hawaii Pacific Friday at 5 p.m. Pacific time in the opener of the West Super Regional in Kaneohe, Hawaii. The winner of the best-of-three set will advance to the Division II College World Series May 27-31 in St. Joseph, Missouri.

CHICO – The third annual Chico State Baseball Golf Tournament, benefiting the Wildcat baseball program, is scheduled for Saturday, July 17. The tournament, which has grown in popularity in each of is first two years, will again take place on the North Course of the legendary La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad.

Luke Barker was in his mother’s belly the first time he took in a Chico State baseball game. Next season he’ll be in the cardinal and white. A fixture at Nettleton Stadium since he was “this big,” (insert old lady motioning low to the ground here) Barker, now 6-foot-3, signed a National Letter of Intent to play baseball for the Wildcats Wednesday in a ceremony at Pleasant Valley High School. Barker, the son of Chico State Athletic Director Anita Barker and Chico State Head Athletic Trainer Scott Barker, chose Chico State over a number of other collegiate baseball programs in Northern California. Performances like he had as a senior at Pleasant Valley this season tend to get that kind of attention.

CHICO – Chico State pitcher Michael Gleason decided to sleep in on the final day of the Major League Baseball Draft, but when the phone rang Wednesday it proved to be the wake-up call of a lifetime. Fresh off an outstanding senior season that resulted in a team-high seven victories and several postseason honors including being named third team All-American, Gleason’s call was from the Boston Red Sox, informing the Wildcats’ star righthander that he was the team’s 34th round selection. Gleason becomes the sixth Wildcat player in the last six seasons to be drafted by a major league organization.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Ping! The ball rockets off the barrel of the bat, severing the air on its route toward the gap in right-center field. Jackson Evans uncoils, drops the bat, and explodes out of the batters’ box. His quads work like pistons, motoring him around first base. He’s thinking three, and when he sees that the ball has bounced off the warning track, off the wall, and high into the air, he knows without hesitation he’s going for it. He hits the bag at second like a blur, takes a few more long strides, and then goes airborne before landing on his belly and sliding into the bag. Thwap! The ball hits the glove. The umpire raises his arms to his side and yells “Safe!” A few moments later, on a ball in the dirt, he does it all over again. But this time he only has to travel 90 feet, and when he slides home safely, the Chico State baseball team has a run on the board.

Michael Gleason has often said that this season was the most fun he’s ever had playing baseball. He can now also remember it for the year he was an All-American thanks to his selection to the 2010 Daktronics All-America Team as a third-team selection. Gleason also joins Johnny Hay, Jackson Evans, Michael Murphy, and Adam Arakawa as an All-West Region honoree as the postseason awards have come pouring in over the past two weeks.

COMPTON – Sometimes home isn’t so sweet. It’s certain that the Chico State baseball team won’t arrive back in Chico with a good taste in its mouth when the team bus pulls into the University Stadium parking lot on Saturday. The Wildcats were the first team eliminated from the NCAA Championship Tournament West Regional Friday when they lost to Hawaii Pacific 11-3 at the MLB Urban Youth Academy.

COMPTON – The Chico State baseball team had won 10 NCAA Championship Tournament West Regional openers in a row. Now, for the first time since 1996, the Wildcats will be forced to attempt to make their way through the losers’ bracket following an 11-4 loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills Thursday night.
