Gleason garners All-America honors, four other ’Cats named All-Region

Michael Gleason has often said that this season was the most fun he’s ever had playing baseball. He can now also remember it for the year he was an All-American thanks to his selection to the 2010 Daktronics All-America Team as a third-team selection. Gleason also joins Johnny Hay, Jackson Evans, Michael Murphy, and Adam Arakawa as an All-West Region honoree as the postseason awards have come pouring in over the past two weeks.

Gleason, the 17th All-American in Chico State baseball history and the first since 2006, compiled a 7-3 record and 3.83 ERA for the Wildcats. He struck out 90 hitters – the sixth most in Chico State history – in 94 innings of work. His 8.62 strikeouts per nine innings is the fourth highest number in school history, and his strikeout-to-walk ratio of 3.90 is the seventh best by a Wildcat.

Gleason also earned Daktronics First Team All-West Region honors, American Baseball Coaches’ Association (ABCA) First Team All-West Region honors, and National Collegiate Baseball Writers’ Association (NCBWA) Second Team All-West Region honors. The Daktronics awards are voted on by the nation’s sports information directors, the ABCA awards are voted on by collegiate baseball coaches, and the NCBWA awards are voted on by writers.

Joining Gleason on the Daktronics All-West Region team is Hay, the Wildcats’ designated hitter. He also garnered ABCA First Team All-West Region and NCBWA Honorable Mention All-West Region accolades. Hay drove in a team-high 60 runs, tied for the eighth most in school history, and also led the team with 11 round-trippers.

Evans, just a junior, received nods as the NCBWA’s First Team All-Region second baseman and second-team honors from both the ABCA and Daktronics. Evans hit .360 and led the Wildcats in triples and stolen bases with 13.

Murphy garnered second team honors from both the ABCA and Daktronics, along with NCBWA Honorable Mention honors at shortstop. He led the Wildcats with a .380 batting average, his 65 runs scored is the seventh highest total in Chico State history, his 127 total bases are the second most ever by a Wildcats shortstop, and his 19 doubles tied him for fifth on the all-time list.

Arakawa received NCBWA Honorable Mention honors in the outfield. An Honorable Mention All-American last season, Arakawa wrapped up his career with the 10th highest batting average in Chico State history (.358), the ninth most doubles in Chico State history (33), and the fourth most walks in Chico State history (69).
