NORMAN, Okla. – Kyle Souza, Lucas Delgado, and Sylvester Gama led the Chico State men’s golf team to a top-five national ranking throughout the season, top-five finishes in every tournament they competed in, and wrapped it up with a third-place finish in the NCAA Championships. Fittingly, the trio has been rewarded with spots on the PING Division II All-America team by the Golf Coaches Association of America it was announced Thursday.
Souza was named Second Team All-America, while Delgado and Gama earned Honorable Mention All-America recognition. The honor was the second in three years for Delgado, who along with Gama, wrapped up his career with the Wildcats at the National Championships.
Souza, only a sophomore, was a finalist for the prestigious Palmer Cup this season. He earned his second straight First Team All-West Region honor earlier this season. Also the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Freshman of the Year last season, Souza followed up a phenomenal freshman year with an even better sophomore campaign. He notched six top-10 finishes in a dozen events, including a sixth-place showing at the NCAA Championships.
Delgado, last year’s CCAA Player of the Year, earned his third straight All-West Region honor and his second Honorable Mention All-America honor in three years. He was also the CCAA’s Newcomer of the Year as a sophomore.
Gama boasted a stroke average of 73.6, won medalist honors at Chico State’s own InterWest Wildcat Classic, and finished second at the loaded Coyote Classic to highlight a very strong senior season. In all, Gama boasted five top-20 finishes this season, including a tie for 18th at the National Championships.
