Highly anticipated men’s basketball season features 15 home games

Defending National Champion Cal Poly Pomona in town Feb. 18

Like an episode of Seinfeld, a slice of Franky’s Pizza or a sunset on the beach, the 2009-10 Chico State men’s basketball season left us all wanting more. An influx of gifted athletes gifted with game and gusto had the Wildcats playing their best basketball at the end of the season. They knocked off Cal State Dominguez Hills in the opening round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championship Tournament and lost to eventual National Champion Cal Poly Pomona when a shot at the buzzer did not fall in the second round.

Back on March 5 when the season ended, eight months seemed like a very long time to wait to see the likes of Zach Graves, Roderick Hawkins, Jay Flores, Terrence Pellum and Damario Sims take the Acker Gym floor again. It won’t be long until that excruciating wait is over. The Wildcats will open their 2010-11 schedule with the annual Red/White Scrimmage on Nov. 6, giving the Wildcat faithful their first glimpse at the newest incarnation of Head Coach Greg Clink’s team.

Following an exhibition at the University of Pacific Nov. 7 and the CCAA opener at Cal State Stanislaus Nov. 18, Chico State will host Bethany University in its regular season home opener on Nov. 22.

That game starts a stretch of seven straight home dates for the Wildcats, including the Mac Martin Invitational and conference showdowns against Humboldt State, Sonoma State and Cal State Stanislaus. The Wildcats will play 15 of their 26 regular season games at home, including 13 of their first 18. As a result, they’ll play just two home games in February. But both have the potential to be epic. Cal Poly Pomona will be in town Feb. 18, and the following night, Cal State San Bernardino will visit.

The Wildcats wrap up the regular season at Cal State Monterey Bay and San Francisco State the following Thursday and Friday. Then, they’re hoping for a postseason run even more satisfying than last season’s when they claimed their first postseason victory in nearly 15 years.
