Thompson has lots of ground to make up following first round of U.S. Amateur Championship

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – Chico State men’s golfer Cody Thompson will need to deliver a dynamic second round if he hopes to advance in the 110th U.S. Amateur Championship. Thompson posted a 12-over par 83 in Monday’s opening round of stroke play, leaving him in a tie for 263rd place in the 312-player field at Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place, Wash.

Things did not start out well for the Chico native on the par-71, 7,742-yard Chambers Bay links-style course. Thompson posted a triple bogey on his first hole, then bogeyed the 402-yard second hole. He temporarily righted the ship with a par on No.3 and his lone birdie of the day on the par-5, 568-yard fourth hole, but it was tough sledding for Thompson the rest of the way.

A bogey on No. 5 and a double bogey at the seventh hole left Thompson with a score of 6-over 42 at the round’s midway point. He was still hanging in at 8-over par through 14 holes, until a bogey-double bogey-bogey string on holes 15 through 17 quashed any hopes of a big finish. Thompson parred the par-5, 604-yard 18th hole to finish the round at 12-over 83, leaving him 22 strokes behind leader Jeff Wilson of Fairfield and some 11 shots shy of the projected stroke play cut line.

Thompson’s second round of stroke play gets underway at 2:15 Tuesday afternoon at Chambers Bay’s companion course, the par-72, 7,420-yard The Home Course. The top 64 golfers following Tuesday’s second round of the U.S. Amateur Championship will advance to match play beginning on Wednesday, with the 36-hole match play championship slated for Sunday.
