UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – Chico State’s Cody Thompson shot a 5-over par 77 Tuesday – a six stroke improvement from Monday’s opening round – but it wasn’t enough to make the cut in stroke play and advance in the 110th U.S. Amateur Championship, being played at Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place, Wash. Thompson completed the event’s first two rounds with a score of 17-over 160, leaving him in a tie for 247th place in the 312 player field.
After posting a 12-over par 83 Monday on the challenging links-style Chambers Bay course, Thompson played with much more consistency on the complex’s companion course, the par-72, 7,420 yard The Home Course. Thompson’s lone birdie Tuesday came on the par-5, 561-yard eighth hole, offsetting a bogey on No. 1; a double bogey on the ninth hole put him at 2-over par 38 midway through the round. Thompson was still at 2-over through 11, but he bogeyed three of the last seven holes to finish at 5-over par 77, 11 strokes off the cutline.
Thompson finished 24 shots back of Jeff Wilson of Fairfield, who posted the low score in stroke play with a 7-under par 136. Wilson will be among the field of 64 who will advance to match play on Wednesday.
Thompson was the third Chico State golfer in three years to participate in the U.S. Amateur Championship. Art Golden III competed last year in Tulsa, Okla., while Ryan Trask was in the field in 2008 U.S. when the tournament was held in Pinehurst, N.C.
