SANTA ROSA – The Chico State women’s golf team, competing in its final fall tournament of the 2011-12 season, placed three players in the top 25 and carded a collective 38-over par 330 en route to a seventh place finish following first day action at the 36-hole Sonoma State Invitational at Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club.
Katie Canadas owned a share of 17th place after the tournament’s opening round, firing an 8-over par 81. Wildcat teammate Sarah McComish shot a 9-over 82 to tie for 23rd place, while Alex Bush’s 10-over par 83 was good for a share of 25th place.
Shelby Hooper delivered an 11-over par 84 on the tourney’s first 18 holes, tying her for 30th place on the individual leader board. Heather Fegley rounded out the Chico State scorecard with a 17-over 90 and a share of 40th place.
Western Washington University, the No. 8 team in the country, holds a 17-stroke lead after the first round thanks to a team score of 7-over par 299. The Vikings’ Sophie Elstrott shot the day’s best individual score, carding a 2-under 71.
