Wildcats post solid fifth place finish at Sonoma State Invitational

Bush shoots lowest round by a Chico State women's golfer this year en route to top 10 finish

SANTA ROSA – The Chico State women’s golf team will undoubtedly enter the spring portion of its 2011-12 season with high expectations, thanks to a solid performance Tuesday in the final round of the Sonoma State Invitational. The Wildcats wrapped up the fall schedule on a positive note, shaving nine strokes off Monday’s first round score at Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club, and carding a collective 29-over par 321 to climb to fifth place in the 36-hole tournament with a total score of 67-over 651.

Junior Alex Bush was on fire Tuesday, carding the lowest round by a Chico State women’s golfer so far this season and matching her career best with a 2-over par 75. The outstanding round helped Bush nab her first-ever top 10 finish as a Wildcat, earning a tie for 10th with an overall score of 12-over 158.

Katie Canadas match her first round score by firing an 8-over par 81 Tuesday to finish in 18th place with a two-day total of 16-over 162. Shelby Hooper came through with a final round 80 to finish tied for 20th place on the individual leader board with an 18-over par 164.

Sarah McComish carded a 12-over par 85 Tuesday to finish the Sonoma State Invitational tied for 27th place with a total score of 21-over par 167. Heather Fegley finished with a 92 Tuesday to claim 42nd place in the tournament with a 36-over 182.

No. 8 Western Washington was the runaway winner of the Sonoma State Invitational, posting a combined score of 29-over par 613, 11 strokes better than second place British Columbia University. Western Washington’s Clair Rachor won individual medalist honors with a 26-hole total of 2-over 146.

Chico State resumes the 2011-12 schedule Feb. 6-7 when the Wildcats travel to San Diego’s Riverwalk Golf Club to take part in the Point Loma Nazarene Invitational.
