DAVIS – Eight members of the Chico State women’s cross country team were in Davis Saturday competing in the final non-championship event of the season, and thanks to their solid efforts, the Wildcats fared very well at the UC Davis-hosted Doc Adams Invitational, posting a third place finish in the teams standings, with three runners – Jessie Varela, Brooke Bergesen and Sara Mikesell – finishing in the individual top 20.
Chico State finished behind only Stanford and UC Davis in the team point standings. Varela’s time of 21:47.1 on the 6-kilometer Putah Creek Reserve course was good for a season-best 13th place finish, while Wildcat teammate Brooke Bergesen finished 17th with a time of 21:51.5. Sara Mikesell completed the trio of Wildcats in the top 20 – her time of 21:56.1 netted the sophomore a 20th place finish.
Three other Wildcats placed in the top 40 among the 81-runner field. Natalie Galvan (22:00.5) came in 23rd place; Olivia Guadiana’s time of 22:27.0 was good for 33rd place, and Samantha Racine finished 37th with a time of 22:36.7.
Hillary LaBelle and Brittney Balcom rounded out the Chico State runners at the Doc Adams Invitational – LaBelle came in 56th place with a time of 23:39.7, while Balcom (26:29.7) finished 77th.
