Arizona prep stars Maccioli and Gunn to join Chico State for 2012-13 season

CHICO – Just because he’s in the middle of one of the most successful seasons in the program’s history, Chico State men’s golf Head Coach T.L. Brown is not spending his time resting on past triumphs. Brown knows that following the 2011-12 season, he will be losing four seniors to graduation – including defending national champion Kyle Souza – and will need to refortify his roster with quality talent. With Arizona high school standouts Anthony Maccioli and Andrew Gunn signing their National Letter of Intent to attend Chico State next fall, Brown is confident the Wildcats will remain strong in 2012-13 and beyond.

Currently a senior at Highland High School in Gilbert, Ariz., Maccioli is coming off a sensational string of spring and summer tournaments, posting 10 top 10 finishes, with seven in the top three. As a result, he was named the 2011 Junior Golf Association of Arizona (JGAA) Player of the Year.

“Anthony has shown the consistent ability to fire red numbers and play his way into position to win,” Brown said. “He is a very dedicated young man, not only to his game but his academics as well.”

Maccioli capped off his productive summer with a first place finish (69-72-141) in the JGAA’s Scottsdale City Junior Championship Sept. 17-18. Back in May, he qualified for the US Open Sectionals with a round of 71 at Southern Dunes Golf Club in Phoenix.

Gunn also comes to Chico with impressive credentials. Playing for Catalina Foothills High School in Tucson, he was a member of the 2009 Arizona State High School Team Champions, and fired rounds of 74 and 72 to finish tied for fourth on the individual leaderboard at the 2011 Arizona High School State Golf Championship. For his efforts, Gunn was named to the Tucson Citizen All-Southern Arizona Boy’s Golf Second Team while earning Division II First Team honors.

“Andrew has had great competitive success in 2011 and has learned to win,” Brown said. “He is the type of player we look for at Chico State – a young man, experienced in winning with a team, and an individual not scared to get the job done in the final round.”

Among Gunn’s high points of 2011 are wins at the Conquistador Spring Classic (74-71-145), the Tubac Junior Classic (72-69-141) and the Green Valley Amateur Championship (74-72-146).
