Pete Riehlman, the former football coach who led the successful Chico State teams of the late 1960s and early '70s, died in Paradise on Thursday.
He was 79.
Known to former players for his immaculate preparation, intense desire to compete and great knowledge of the game, Riehlman's highlight at Chico State was leading the 1971 squad to the Camellia Bowl against Boise State. He is a member of the Chico Sports Hall of Fame (2008) and an honorary member of the Chico State Hall of Fame.
From 1968 to 1973, he compiled a 42-18 record in his time as Wildcat coach, leading six players to the NFL but having an impact on the lives of countless others.
