Newest Wildcat Wheeler is prepared for next step

Brennan Wheeler is used to being pushed by his brothers. So he'll be ready for the everyday grind in Acker Gym when he gets pushed to improve by his "Wildcat Family" next season.

The 6-foot-5 guard from Ponderosa High School in Shingle Springs has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Chico State next season.

"I'm the youngest of five with two older brothers," Wheeler told Kevin McCarthy for a NorCalPreps.com story. "We played and they railed on me and pushed me to go harder. I'm a pretty physical player and they taught me how to never back down, to keep scratching and fighting."

With only two players set to graduate from the Chico State program following this season, Wheeler will have plenty of Wildcat brothers to show him the ropes.

"Brennan is going to be a great addition to the Wildcat family," said Chico State Head Coach Greg Clink. "Not only is he an outstanding basketball player with a tremendous upside, but he is also a spectacular student and has great character. He is going to be a perfect fit for our program. He has played for outstanding coaches and has an outstanding foundation to build upon. We can't wait for him to join us next fall."

Wheeler averaged 14.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game last season. He shot 55 percent from the field and 76 percent from the free throw line while leading the Bruins to a 20-9 record. According to NorCal Preps, he's the No. 22 player in Northern California and the ninth-ranked wing.

He is the 12th NorCal Preps top-40 player to commit early to Chico State since 2010. All other California Collegiate Athletic Association programs have signed a combined total of 12 top-40 preps during that time.

Wheeler played AAU basketball with the EBA Pharaohs, coached by Chico State alum Jason Barton.

An All-Capital Valley Conference selection, Wheeler was also honorable mention All-Sacramento Bee. Two of his future teammates–redshirting freshmen Malik Duffy and Isaiah Brooks–were Second Team All-Bee.

He is also an honor roll student and Eagle Scout.

Future opponents take note: Wheeler will be prepared.
