Lane Andrews set a new meet record in winning the decathlon, while Phill Bailey and Jason Dunn each collected California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) titles while scoring in other events as the Chico State men's track and field team took a commanding lead on the first full day of the CCAA Track & Field Championships Friday at Chico State's University Stadium.
In search of their 13
th CCAA title in the past 14 seasons, the Wildcats finished the day with a 90.5–62.5 edge over Cal Poly Pomona through six of 21 event finals.
They've won three of those six titles. Andrews broke a 32-year-old meet record with 7,263 points in his win in the decathlon, giving the Wildcats four of the top five scores in the event in Division II this season. The man with the top score, Bailey, won the long jump Friday with a leap of 7.26 meters. He also tied for sixth in the pole vault, qualified first for tomorrow's 100-meter final, and also qualified for the 110-meter hurdles final. Jason Dunn, the man who ranks second in the nation in the decathlon, won the javelin with a heave of 63.90 meters, bettering his personal-record (PR) by better than five meters. His is the 16
th best mark in the nation this season. Dunn also delivered big points with his third-place finish in the long jump, and qualified for Saturday's 100- and 200-meter finals.
But they were not the only contributors to the Wildcats' big day. Nolan Nagle, who finished second in the hammer throw personal-best effort, was among 13 more Chico State athletes who scored with an eighth-place finish or better.

The Wildcats did their biggest damage in the long jump, logging four of the top five leaps for a point total of 25.
Bailey won, Dunn finished third, Aaron Martin fourth, and Eric Richard fifth.
And in Friday's qualifying, eleven men moved on to Saturday's finals.
Here is an event-by-event breakdown of Friday's action, beginning with the six finals and continuing with qualifying races:
Finals
10,000 Meter Run
In his last crack at this distance as a collegiate, Andrew Cobourn posted his fastest time yet, 31:07.79, to net the Wildcats five important points with his fourth-place finish. Steven Velarde (32:20.05) placed sixth and Arturo Arevalo (32:52.26) eighth to bring the team's total in the event to nine.
Pole Vault
Senior Dalton McBride finished fourth with a clearance of 4.76 meters, missing a chance to stand on the podium in a tiebreaker determined by total vaults. True freshman Anthony La Scala and Bailey tied for sixth (4.61). Teammate Justin Woo also cleared 4.61 but finished a spot outside of the scoring via tiebreaker.
Long Jump
Richard's leap of 6.94 meters was a gigantic PR, adding to what was already expected to be an impressive haul for the Wildcats, who lead the nation in the event.
Hammer Throw
Nagle nabbed eight points for the Wildcats with his runner-up throw of 54.33 meters.
Javelin Throw
Martin and Jake Mitchell added to Dunn's scoring for Chico State. Martin finished on the podium with a third-place throw of 59.21 meters, while Mitchell's 54.31-meter effort was good for sixth place. Dunn's effort is the third longest PR in program history and longest since 2005.
Decathlon
Andrews' effort means the Wildcats' current crew boasts four of the top eight PRs in the program's history. Bailey ranks second, Dunn third, Martin sixth, and Andrews eighth. All four will represent the Wildcats at the NCAA Championships in Florida May 25-27. But this weekend is about the conference crown. And if the Wildcats win it again, there are four more decathletes who will have helped it happen. Alex Davila, Jake Mitchell, Josh Dickson, and Ryan Troudy finished 5-6-7-8 for the Wildcats.
