Christmas comes about three weeks early for fans of the Chico State women’s basketball team this year. Bitter rival Humboldt State comes to town on Dec. 3 for what is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated games of the season following their four memorable games from last season. And the following weekend the Wildcats face fellow Western Region powers Western Washington and Seattle Pacific at the CCAA/GNAC Challenge, hosted by Sonoma State.

CHICO – Head Coach Brian Fogel didn’t have to venture far to land his latest recruit for the Chico State women’s basketball team – he merely looked in his own backyard, to the foothills just east of Chico, to bring a talented, explosive guard to the Wildcat attack. Paradise High School star Caressa Williams has officially signed on to play for the ’Cats in the upcoming 2010-11 season, Chico State announced Wednesday.

Softball
Kacie McCarthy’s freshman season as a Wildcat has been filled with highlights, but the Shingletown native turned in her most memorable performances of the year last weekend in the NCAA West Sub-Regional at Sonoma State, posting three straight victories and helping Chico State advance to the West Super Regional in Hawaii. The Wildcats are just two wins away from reaching the Division II College World Series, thanks in large part to the pitching prowess of McCarthy, who is the latest recipient of Wildcat of the Week honors.
In Friday’s Sub-Regional opener, McCarthy took over for Chico State starter Jessica McDermott and tossed seven-and-a-third innings of relief, striking out a career-high 11 batters and earning the win as the Wildcats beat 15th ranked Grand Canyon University 5-4 in eight innings. In Saturday’s winner’s bracket game versus No. 14 Sonoma State, McCarthy twirled a one-hit shutout in Chico State’s 7-0 victory over the host Seawolves. Sunday McCarthy completed the postseason trifecta, going the distance for the 18th time this year and getting credit for the “W” as the ’Cats rallied back from three runs down to score four times in the bottom of the sixth inning and pull out a 4-3 victory over Dixie State to sweep through the Sub-Regional and advance to this weekend’s West Super Regional.
McCarthy, now 16-10 on the season, lowered her season ERA to 1.92 with the three weekend wins and is ranked third among California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) pitchers. She also is sixth in the conference in victories and innings pitched (164.1). She leads the Wildcats in wins, complete games, innings pitched and appearances (29).
Chico State takes on the No. 3 ranked Sea Warriors of Hawaii Pacific Friday at 5 p.m. Pacific time in the opener of the West Super Regional in Kaneohe, Hawaii. The winner of the best-of-three set will advance to the Division II College World Series May 27-31 in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Men's Track
As a decathlete, Brian Beeman is used to running all over the place. But he took it to a new level last week. After competing in the decathlon, high jump and javelin to help lead the Chico State men’s track & field team to the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship March 6-8, he got on a bus and arrived back in Chico in the wee hours of Sunday morning. Then, he turned around to head back to Southern California for the Claremont Classic Decathlon and turned in an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark and personal best score of 6,512 on Thursday and Friday.
That iron-man feet has earned him Wildcat of the Week honors.
Beeman finished sixth at the Burns Track and Field Complex while logging the 15th best score in the nation this year. He won the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:31.75, placed third in the 400-meter dash (51.19 seconds) and tied for third in the high jump (6-feet-02.75).
Beeman and a number of his Wildcats teammates now await Wednesday morning’s NCAA Track and Field Championships selection show to found out if he’s earned a berth to the National Championships May 27-29 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Before the 2009-10 even got underway, Chico State women’s basketball Head Coach Brian Fogel described junior guard Natasha Smith as “the key to our success.” Truer words have never spoken, as Smith has turned her already impressive game up a notch to lead the Wildcats to the NCAA Championship Tournament West Regional title game. Her efforts have netted the Sacramento native her third Wildcat of the Week honor this season.

The Wildcats, won won 23 games this season and advanced to the Sweet 16, are scheduled to arrive in front of Acker Gym at approximately 2:40 p.m. We would love to have a big crowd there to help the Wildcats celebrate one of the most successful seasons in the history of the program.

SEATTLE, Wash. – As the sixth seed, the Chico State women’s basketball team was definitely the Cinderella of the NCAA Championship Tournament West Region final against the No. 1 seed, Seattle Pacific. Despite the fact that the host Falcons had won 13 in a row entering Monday’s contest, the Wildcats had won 15 of their last 17, averaged over 82 points in their two West Region victories, and liked their chances of pulling off the upset. But the glass slipper the ’Cats had hoped to wear to the ultimate dance – the Elite Eight – was smashed at Royal Brougham Pavilion, as Seattle Pacific won the West Region title and ended Chico State’s 2009-10 season with a 76-68 victory.

But the Chico State Wildcats, walloped by 30 points at the hands of Humboldt State in last Saturday’s California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Conference Championship Tournament title game, got even when it counted – with the entire season hanging in the balance. The Wildcats posted their biggest offensive night of the 2009-10 campaign, outscoring the Lumberjacks 36-14 in the final 10 minutes Saturday to hand Humboldt an 86-76 loss in the NCAA Championship Tournament West Region semifinals at Seattle Pacific University’s Royal Brougham Pavilion. The win earned the ’Cats a spot in Monday’s West Region final for the fourth time in six years, and the chance to advance to the Elite Eight for the first time since the 2005-06 season.

SEATTLE – Head Coach Brian Fogel was so proud of his Chico State women’s basketball team following Friday’s 79-68 upset of Western Washington in the first round of the NCAA Championship Tournament West Regional, he was wiping the tears from his eyes during his postgame radio interview with Wildcats’ play-by-play man Mike Baca. It perfectly encapsulated the pure emotion the ’Cats, the No. 6 seed, put on the Brougham Pavilion floor for 40 solid minutes, eliminating a Vikings squad – ranked No. 18 in the nation – that had beaten Chico State by 21 points earlier in the year. The Wildcats, rallying from eight down early in the second half, broke open a close contest in the final three minutes, and now advance to semifinal action Saturday afternoon.
