Audi makes u-turn back to Chico State

Audi Spencer, one of program’s all-time greats, hired as head assistant coach

Audi Spencer will be roaming the vicinity around the three-point line in Acker Gym this season. It’s going to take a lot of mental fortitude for the Chico State fans across the floor not to scream “Pass it to Audi!” Fortunately, the temptation will be minimal since Spencer will be wearing coaching attire instead of a uniform.

Spencer, the best 3-point shooter in Chico State history and sixth on the school’s career scoring list, has been hired as Brian Fogel’s head assistant coach for the 2010-11 season.

“We feel very fortunate to have Audi back in our program,” said Fogel. “She was a great player here and has a great passion for Chico State. Obviously, she’s going to be a valuable asset to our program. We’re definitely going to draw on her experiences playing in the Final Four and on three conference championship teams.”

Spencer spent last season playing professionally for the Union Kuenring Flames of the Austrian Basketball League, First Division. She led the league in scoring at 29.8 points per game. Prior to that, Spencer was an assistant on Molly Goodenbour’s staff at UC Irvine during the 2008-09 season.

Spencer helped lead Chico State to three California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships in four seasons from 2005-08. In 2006, Spencer and the Wildcats advanced to the national semifinals - farther than any other team in Chico State women’s basketball history has gone. The 2008 First Team All-West Region selection and Honorable Mention All-American played in more games than anyone in Chico State women’s basketball history. The school’s career leader in made 3-pointers and 3-point percentage, Spencer also ranks fourth on the school’s career assists list, sixth in scoring, and sixth in steals.

Spencer graduated with a degree in exercise physiology from Chico State in 2008.
